I am evaluating modules for linking CCK nodes with Taxonomy vocabularies. I want to assign terms to CCK nodes and I want to import Taxonomy terms with other data using Node Import. Examples and suggestions are welcome. If anyone has used the modules listed below, I would like to hear about your experiences. (good, bad or ugly)
CCK Taxonomy Fields
http://drupal.org/project/cck_taxonomy
5.x-1.0 2007-May-20
Taxonomy vocabularies will show up as field types that can be added to content types using CCK. Field types can be named anything you want and you can even have several different fields from the same vocabulary on one content type. Freetagging vocabularies aren't yet supported. Storage is done in the CCK tables only. Basic views and token module integration is provided, and this module handles changes to the 'multiple' setting on vocabularies gracefully. It also cleans up after itself if you delete a vocabulary.

Content Taxonomy

5.x-1.x-dev 2007-May-10
provides a field type for CCK for referencing taxonomy terms.
Available widgets:
- selects
- radios / checkboxes
- autocomplete
- activeselect

Taxonomy Fields
http://drupal.org/project/taxonomy_fields
5.x-1.4-dev 2007-May-03
The taxonomy_fields module brings two important modules together: CCK and taxonomy. As CCK can assign fields to content types, taxonomy_fields can assign CCK fields to categories. By doing this, content types are not limited to the same range of fields anymore.

Sounds a little complex, and let me add that I have not used any of the modules above just yet. I have been experimenting with node import, and I think it would handle any CCK field (taxonomy fields or otherwise). Node Import does come with some taxonomy processing for the usual types like Pages, but not with CCK types as far as I can tell. It's pretty cool, because you can specify new terms as the nodes are imported or stop a node from being imported if it is using an unknown term. Things like that.
If you want to import nodes into a CCK type including terms into a taxonomy field (probably would use CCK Taxonomy Fields module), it seems possible, but I bet there's no or little validation on your imported terms (i.e. make sure your terms are valid before importing).

CCK Taxonomy Fields
RE: http://drupal.org/project/cck_taxonomy
I installed CCK Taxonomy Fields and did not get the results I wanted. The field allows you to select from a defined vocabulary but does not tag the content type node with the selected terms. The terms are stored in the CCK database but has no useful effect that I can discern.
I use Import_Node and it works well. My goal is to import terms that tag the related nodes. I accept the need to validate imported terms. If free tagging is allowed, this problem could be mitigated. (btw, CCK_taxonomy does not allow free tagging.)
I am going to try the other two modules:

CCK Taxonomy redux
I played around with these two modules:

I am still not getting the results I am looking for, ie, import terms into CCK fields and tag the nodes automatically. I will put them on the back burner for now.
I have found a couple of useful tweaks for using Node Import:
1. import multiple values with double bar separators: e.g. water||milk||coffee
http://drupal.org/node/110512
2. import into CCK dropdowns by changing widget from Select list to Text field, then do the import, and then change the widget back to Select list.

Any luck?
I am looking to do something similar with tagging of nodes but also want to allow users to create a new tax term if one is not found in the drop down.
I haven't found a way to
I haven't found a way to combine a drop down tax list with free tagging.
I have used both CCK Taxonomy Fields and CCK Taxonomy
You are correct that CCK does not tag the node with the taxonomy, but it is still usefull in views.
I just committed a patch to fix multi select fields in exposed view filters.
If you want hierarchical categories for cck, and do not need each filed to have its own page then cck taxonomy fields is a good option. Just make a dummy content type to attach all your taxonomy terms to.
first I've heard of that approach
I've always checked a content type and then edited the vocabulary again and unchecked it (submitting it works even though selecting the content type is required). Do you know of any advantage to to your approach of creating a vocabulary assigned to a dummy content type?
