GSoC 2014 is ending and it is time to start planning for GSoC 2015. What have we learned in 2014 that we can improve on in 2015? It is never too early to start planning, so please, feel to free to add any thoughts/ideas/feedback here. Even if you're interested in being a mentor or student next summer, feel free to join this group and ping us here.

Really enjoyed being a first-time mentor!
I'm glad that I participated in Google Summer of Code this year - it was a fun experience from vetting the proposals all the way to mentoring the code projects!
I think that my thoughts would be to get people thinking about this earlier - I think a lot of developers in the Drupal community don't necessarily think about Google Summer of Code as a way to contribute back to Drupal. I for one, wasn't exactly sure about what type of commitment it would be, or what Google would want from the project.
Maybe the best way of getting the word out there should be at the DrupalCamp level, just because the North America and European DrupalCons happen after the deadlines for the year?
Drupal Developer should take more interest in GSoC
If you think from a student perspective, they will be motivated if community member ( other than his/her mentor ) take interest and guide them and also they may not face difficulty if there is no proper documentation available on drupal.org . For example I have user REST module for our project and it is not well documented so we have faced many problem but when I approach IRC for my doubts usually no reply at all , if I send message through contact page still no reply. It may be that case people are busy with their other work but they can send 20 - 30 mins on week ends. : )
Standard GSoC/GCI Presentation for Drupal camps/events...
Jeff, I really like your idea about community outreach via camps/events...Maybe we can create a standard GSoC/GCI presentation focused on Drupal that any mentor/student can present in their own local community?
GSoC student - a great experience
Hello everybody,
I am Andrei Dincu and I was student for Drupal org during the GSoC 2014. I should say that it was a great experience. I learned a lot about Drupal 8 and now I would like to continue contributing to D8 core. In the future, I will be happy to become GCI mentor because I want to introduce the value of open-source to new members.
I encourage students interested in open-source to join the Drupal community because they will find great people with a lot of enthusiasm. The Drupal community is very large and members are very helpful. I asked a lot of questions in #drupal-contribute (Drupal contributors IRC channel) during the GSoC period, but I also used #drupal-google and #drupal-seo.
Thanks to all members that helped me to learn Drupal.
I would like to make a suggestion: maybe for the GSoC 2015 there will be a video meeting weekly with all students and mentors where they can talk about the progress of their work. I think that a good interaction between GSoC students should be great.
Standard presentation on GSoC
I think it would be fantastic to have a standard talk/presentation on GSoC and Google Code-In that would fit into a 45-minute space - I think that might be the best way to get the word out in person.
Here's a rough outline I came up with:
I'm sure there's a lot that could be added or improved on, if anyone else has thoughts!
GCI Task!
This is a perfect task for Google Code-In coming up in a few months. Maybe we can spend the next few months planning the presentation structure and be prepared for a GCI student to finish? Maybe a second task is for any student to present the presentation at their school? Jeff, are you interested being mentor...?
By the way, if anyone is wondering...we already started our task list for GCI 2014 @ https://groups.drupal.org/node/420453
GCI Task
I think that would be great! I just signed up for the Google Code In group. It might be a perfect presentation for Drupal User Groups and the like as well.
Great experience with Drupal during GSoC
I was a GSoC student under Drupal this year and it was an absolutely awesome experience. The best part of working with Drupal is it's really nice & helpful community. Since Drupal has a large community, it almost never happened that my doubts went unanswered in one of the IRC channels.
I really like @andrei.dincu's idea of having a joint weekly meeting. I believe this will help to bring to all the students and mentors on the same page regarding progress of other projects.
GSoC was awesome, looking forward to being a GCI mentor!
starting early
The simplest thing that I can say about this topic is the importance of starting early. In 2013, I had a student who had made no contact with the community but submitted an application through Google Melange at exactly one minute before the deadline, just like a late bid on an eBay auction. The student was not selected, there simply wasn't time for me to get to know who he was. I've written a blog summarising some of my thoughts about how to get students involved well before GSoC from the student's perspective, how to get involved in the wider community and improve their chance of being selected for GSoC 2015
Interested to be GSoC 15 mentor
Though I don't have too much experience with Drupal but unfortunately I won't be student in next summer. So I want to help community by being a mentor. I am committed to give all required efforts .
Interested in being student for GSOC 2015
I think it would be good if a discussion or a meeting with students who want to involve with drupal this year can be done so that they may start preparing early.
meeting with potential students is great idea!
Zealfire's idea is great. Maybe we can schedule two dates and times for potential students to ask questions in IRC? I think the next question is when to schedule the meetings? How early before proposal phase is too early?
meeting time with potential students
I am also a potential candidate for GSoC 2015 and the idea sounds good to me ! May be we can schedule a meeting on IRC after GCI .. Can we ?
Hey , I want to get involved
