Hey Everyone,
A couple Drupalers are heading up a day before Drupalcamp Asheville to go hiking. The current plan is to do all or part of the shining rock trail (see http://www.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip/311988). Depending on our out-of-shapeness®, we may loop back in the middle (where the paths cross). I'm pretty out of shape, so this is a likely possibility.
The current plan is for myself, Derek Deraps, and Andy Giles to meetup at Biscuit Head (http://www.biscuitheads.com/) at 9am Friday morning. We'll feast on a hearty breakfast to prepare for the day, and then head up to the mountains to see some of the most beautiful country in the US. (We plan on leaving Andy behind, so no worries about having to hang with him).
We'll plan on starting hiking around 11am and may be up in the mountains until 7 or 8pm. So plan accordingly!
What you'll need
- Hiking shoes
- A backpack to carry water and food
- socks
- sunscreen
- a couple beers to celebrate
If you're interested, we'd love to have you! Post a comment below and we'll get in touch and share contact info.

Gah!
Mike,
Would love to come with you, but I don't think I'll be able to make it until early Friday evening.
I have a new Drupal site due that Friday.......
Drat
I would love to join you, but I'm slammed with work and won't be able to get to AVL until Saturday.
I've hiked in Shining Rock Wilderness Area a couple times, so here's my advice: Don't underestimate the steepness of the climb. Sections of the trail can be very steep. Also, take a map. It's easy to get off trail without realizing it.
For anyone interested in the hike but not familiar with the area, here's a map and photos from an overnight trip (on a different route) I did a few years ago: http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=916730.
Maps and preparation are for
