What version of Drupal core are you all using? We currently use Drupal 7.2 and our contractor suggested an upgrade to 7.16 (in progress today). After some research it looks like this version was released back in 2012 and the most recent is 7.31. We're not developers so any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

I see no reason not to be

I see no reason not to be running 7.31, especially in light of various security enhancements it includes.

Universal Analytics

Thanks bearstar. As far as we can tell we haven't upgraded since site launch. Is upgrading core something that should be done frequently? 7.16 was only suggested after we requested implementing tracking for Universal Analytics. Not sure why we wouldn't go with the most recent version instead. I'm sure they know what's best, just trying to get a better understanding.

I think that keeping the core

I think that keeping the core updated make sense, mainly to reduce security risks and to protect the server from vulnerabilities that get patched with security updates. In your case, why not run 7.31 instead of 7.16 (unless something in versions higher than 7.16 will interfere with some custom modules you might have running)? Often, in big jumps like from 7.2 to 7.31, it's best to do it more incrementally, so going 7.16 first makes sense, but I wouldn't stop there....:-)

I absolutely agree that keeping core updated makes sense, and question why this was not happening already.

Unless your person can tell you a specific and critical reason why they can't upgrade to the newest version of core, then that is what they should be doing. Right now, you are missing out on security patches and are open to risk. If they can't update to the newest version right away, a plan should be in place to get you there asap.

I personally would rather lose functionality or have to rewrite a custom module than be behind on security -- but that's just me (it depends on the nature of your site and how much risk you're willing to accept for reasons of cost, functionality, etc.).

That being said, make sure you can roll back to the previous version if all does not go as expected.
