Please be gentle, only just started using Drupal over the last week.
I have offered to redesign a Drupal install for a friend of mine, after the person who originally installed and built disappeared without trace.
I have designed many cms/blogs/ecommerce over the last ten years, using Xoops, WordPress, Magento etc, but never with Drupal.
I have setup a dev site with a copy of the site and database. I am using Drupal 6.15, I also have CTools 6.12 and Panels 6.32.
The homepage is using panels with a 2 column stacked layout and I am having difficulty editing any content within the panel. I have search for the last 10 hours through this site, the net and watched videocasts, but still cannot get anything to work properly.
On the panels page for 'homepage' most of my buttons (except layout, content and preview) do not work and if selected returns a popup alert stating 'an error occurred when trying to process 'filename' '. This also happens if trying to add content, the modal window appears and then the same error message again. Clone and export return the same error.
Could anyone suggest what my problem might be, or the direction I should be looking please.

This indicates some kind of server failure when attempting the AJAX operations. Can you check the apache/php/watchdog log for any PHP errors during that request?
Also, using firefox and firebug, you might look at the POST response. It should be JSON output, which isn't going to look like much of interest, but it probably does not if you're getting that error.

Thanks for the info, I got it working now.
I had the devel theme developer enabled, once I disabled it my ability to use all the buttons came back.
