Plan for reducing the load of duplication projects

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Problem/Motivation

Reduce the duplication projects : While reviewing the project applications the duplication of the projects is bit time consuming and we have to find the projects first and then request the user to mention the difference with their sandbox project and the existing drupal.org projects. This process is taking too much time time and will take git administers & reviewers to follow up the application again & again.

Proposed Solution

I suggest that we should motivate the users to submit the unique projects in the project applications issue queue. There is a group Contributed Module Ideas(managing by John Albin) that helps in Reducing the duplication projects. We should motivate the users to first post the features about their module in this group and if they did not get the similar project in 3 days(I am expecting). Also add the link of their post of contributed module ideas in drupal project application issue summary. This will reduce the load of the extra existing modules on the git administers and reviewers and they can easily contribute in the Contributed Module ideas group discussions.

Remaining Tasks

if the proposed idea is fine then we need to add the step here https://www.drupal.org/node/1011698
@TODO update other pages that will need updation.

Checking for duplicates is

mpdonadio's picture

Checking for duplicates is the second item on the Project Application Checklist:

1.2 Ensure your project is not a duplication.
You should really spend some time searching for modules which provide similar functionality. As we prefer collaboration over competition we want to prevent having duplicating modules on drupal.org. If the differences between your modules are not too fundamental for patching an existing one, we would love to see you joining forces and concentrate all power on enhancing one module. (If the existing module is abandoned, please think about taking it over).

And the reading the PAC is in the third item on the page you suggest updating.

I'm not convinced that this is enough of a problem to warrant additional work on the applicants.

Usage of Contributed Module Ideas group

We can add the Contributed Module Ideas group in the second item on the Project Application Checklist to find the duplicate easier & faster by the applicant.
What do you think ?

I'm not convinced that this is enough of a problem to warrant additional work on the applicants.

If we get the story link of the contributed module suggestion group with the application then that will become the + point for the reviewer to review the project because s/he can see about the duplicates on the story link of the contributed module suggestion group. It will take less time for reviewer to see regarding its duplicates and it is pretty sure that the project already not exists and with the unique functionality.By this we can speed up the process of reviewing the project and save git admins time also.
What do you reckon here ?

I do not think project

I do not think project duplication is as big of a deal as you think it is, and we are working to try to streamline the application process and reduce the amount of time it takes to get vetted access. Posting to another group, which is also run by volunteers, will just slow things down more.

Ok its fine

Thanks for your thoughts.
Yes it's and extra work in the application access but this can also encourage new applicants to first share about their new project ideas in the contributed ideas group.
We can use the current way for streamlining application process.
Thanks Again!
