Voting for the Drupal Association South Africa (DASA) governing board is now open, here:

From today, Wednesday the 1st on October 2014 until midnight Friday the 24th of October (SAST) voting is open.

Vote right here in this thread.

  • Anyone a member of GDoSA (groups.drupal.org/south-africa) can vote, as long as they were a member before the 10th of September 2014.
  • Vote by supplying a list in order of preference of up to 7 candidates.
  • Only one vote per person, the latest of multiple votes cast by one person invalidates the preceding ones by that person unless the latest is invalid, then the latest preceding valid one, if one exists will count.
  • Adam and Riaan will tally the votes < one week. Counting 7 points for the highest preference and one less point for every one thereafter per vote.
  • Greg will audit and publish the results.

Candidates' are:

  • I'm Freda Browne, I am a qualified Human Resources Manager with 25 years human resources and recruitment experience. My introduction to Drupal was very coincidental and very exciting. I have 7 years of content management, views and content types experience in Drupal. I feel that I was taught by the very best tutors there are in South Africa.

  • I'm Riaan, 40-year-old ex teacher, lecturer, nightclubs owner, small business owner and free (libre) software and community advocate. Started using Drupal in version 4 having built own CMSes and tried several others before and switched exclusively to Drupal until the last few years revealed so many great front- and back-end frameworks to compliment Drupal. I hope to continue to contribute to building a local South African Drupal association with national value for all local Drupal users.

  • I'm Greg, an Entrepreneur/Business Owner and Senior Drupal Developer. I've worked with Drupal since 2006 and built projects for South Africa's corporate businesses and NGO's. As an avid believer in FOSS, I joined the Drupal Association South Africa as Chairman in 2013. Promoting the use of Drupal to the web industry in South Africa is a primary goal of mine, and I hope to build a local community over as many geographic areas as possible.

  • I am Adam Dunn, a Pigeon Fancier and at the age of 60 decided to learn a language to keep my brain active. So I learned Drupal and now for completeness am learning HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, Drush, Github and C++. What worries me is that at each Drupal Meetup we learn about more cool technologies that I will have to learn but am running out of time. I graduated with a BSc Civil Engineering degree in 1976 from the University of Natal. I was appointed as Head of Strength of Materials at Technikon Natal in the Engineering Faculty where I remained for 11 years before starting a company of my own in Johannesburg. My current project is a modern pigeon website www.pigeonuniverse.co.za. Check it out.

  • I’m Robin, a founder of a design and development company using Drupal for all our web development projects. I started using Drupal from version 5 and made it our tool of choice not only because it it is powerful and flexible, but mainly because of the community. The community is extremely open, helpful and willing to share information. These are values I identify with and will always keep me involved with and try and grow Drupal in South Africa.

  • I'm Lancelot, a qualified Oracle Developer now working as Research and Developement analyst. I have a passion for Drupal and HTML5 technologies. I have been using Drupal since 2006 and have a small business that offers Drupal services in Namibia. The nurturing of Drupal and supporting technologies within the Drupal SA community is something that I love and I'm determined to support it in any way I can.

  • I'm Jason Mathipa Legodi, 27-years old, born in Limpopo studied web and application at Tshwane University of Technology. In 2008 I was voted as the best multimedia student. In my short career as a web developer I started working on several CMS’s (i.e Joomal, Wordpress, Typo3, Sharepoint and cs-cart then I stumbled upon the amazing Drupal in 2012 and it has been playing well with me. I would be happy to serve and add value to the Drupal community at large.

  • I am Renate Ehlers, a 28 year old qualified chef and I recently started my career as web-designer and -developer. I work for a company that has been designing websites commercially since 2001. As we have had more requests to build sites using a CMS, my search began to find a comprehensive system that has a good balance between functionality and design-ability. We chose to use Drupal as it ticked all the boxes. We decided that the steep learning curve was merely an obstacle to overcome. If we want to use a CMS we would use the best there is. The Drupal community has been inviting and kind. I would like to contribute my time to this wonderful initiative to open the world of Drupal to as many South Africans as possible.

  • My name is Jason Lewis. I'm Creative Director at Robboto in Cape Town and have been working in the industry for 15 years now. I currently head up the Drupal user-group meetups in Cape Town. I'm very passionate about helping to grow Drupal adoption on a provincial level and hope to do so nationally with DASA, drawing on my years of experience in design, branding and marketing, working with various local and overseas clients.

  • I’m Johan du Bois, a long time Drupaler of indeterminate age, who works at e-Government for Citizens (http://www.westerncape.gov.za/about-us) where we use Drupal to empower people by making government information and services available online. A strong and visible South African Drupal Association will support adoption of Drupal in the public & corporate sectors and promote our shared values of openness, collaboration, and giving back to the community. Let’s build it together.

Always tough to pick only seven and rank them. I worked with the existing board members and Freda's been to just about every meeting of late too, jumping right in. Keeping in mind that the board is just a formal structure and that participation and meetings are open to all, we'll likely see all the candidates actively involved in the coming year. Good luck to all and see you soon!

My apologies, even though

kylegrey's picture

My apologies, even though I've been more active in the drupal space recently, I've never really immersed myself in the community as adequately as I should I have and the fault is mine. Because of this I only created my account today.

Regardless of this, I'd still like to have my say.

Can't vote?

riaan burger's picture

I've heard from several people that they can't seem to post due to Mollom/CAPTCHA problems or profiles that can't post on here.

We'll have to have an actual formal vote to accept changes to the voting process, so this is just a suggestion until such time that we can meet to confirm, but this should help:

On your Drupal.org profile, edit your profile, then in your "Personal" tab add your votes tot he About me field. Finally, ask someone who can post in this thread to come post here with your votes and note that the votes can be confirmed by checking your profile. Adam or myself will confirm the profile shows the same and that that was your intended vote.

Mollom?

riaan burger's picture

The problem may be with Mollom. If it is similar to this https://www.drupal.org/node/2205905 issue, then Mollom may be triggering posts as spam when the first line, which turns into the comment subject, repeats all the time.

For those who can't post/vote, please start our first line with something unique, like: "I, Riaan Burger, vote:" or just some random text.

Assuming that the initial shuffle is done with uniform distribution (a reasonable assumption) then repeating the reordering in a loop seems superfluous. Unless I'm missing something.

This was a stunning amount of votes! Really feel special to be part of the South African Drupal community!

Announcing the Voting Results

Gemma Morton's picture

Good evening everyone,

Thank you to those who have voted and those who are watching the elections with interest. As these are the first DASA elections, we are very pleased about the participation received from the community. Your time to vote and give your voice means a lot to those of us who have been nominated. With 24 qualifying votes, and 4 that weren't able to qualify (the accounts were too new, or posted their vote too late), we feel we have the backing of the community to continue our work, for those of us who are re-elected, and for those who are newly elected.

Our next DASA meeting will take place on the 19th November 2014. The various positions will be open to nominations by the Board. We will post an update with the details of who has been elected into what position, and what you can expect to be achieved in the next year. Keep a look out for these details, and let us know what you think.

Without further waiting, here are the results https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11VMJ15-lFbJgenjqeB7JmcttNXjIRBLk... . The results have been tallied by Riaan and Adam (Thank you!), and verified by myself. If you find anything at fault, please post a comment on the spreadsheet and we will review it.

In order of most votes:

  1. Riaan Burger
  2. Greg McKeen
  3. Jason Lewis
  4. Adam Dunn
  5. Robin Prieschl
  6. Johan du Bois
  7. Freda Browne

Congratulations everyone. See you at the next meeting.

Congratulations to Everyone who Voted!

riaan burger's picture

It looks like an awesome and hard working board and we have so many more people attending the DASA meeting each month that also stand ready and jump in to make things happen.

Especially exciting to me is that we now have two people from Cape Town on the board! Way to go national with the representation voters!

At nearly 10% of the GDoSA members we did very well with the turnout! South Africa's community is really coming alive and standing to be recognised. We do still have some work ahead of us though, with 300+ members of GDoSA and 7000+ Drupal developers, themers or just Drupal curious people in South Africa, many more remain to be engaged and even more to be introduced.
