Drupal Social Initiative BoF notes from Amsterdam

Here are some points...

• A really good point made was that we are at a very crucial juncture where all modules need to be recoded for Drupal 8. If we can propose a new social integration API framework, that heavily abstracts functionality into several layers, then we may win the hearts and minds of a lot of module maintainers who are facing the daunting tasking of upgrading their modules. By sharing the work of maintaining social network API libraries we can all save a bit of time and be more efficient collectively.

• In the meeting we set up a Drupal Social Initiative organisation on GitHub. Ask to get added.

• We reiterated that we want to abstract/harmonise: configuration for social modules; response rendering; user interface elements.

• We took a quick poll to try and decide one use case that we would implement first.

  • Creating content on Drupal and simultaneously posting to social networks: 5 likes. Wins!
  • Import friends: 2 likes.
  • Synchronise Drupal with GitHub: 1 like.
  • Login with social networks: 2 likes.
  • Pull in content from social networks: 2 likes.
  • Share button: 1 like.
  • Follow button: 1 like.
  • Like button: 1 like.

• Can we tag/badge projects on d.o so we get more exposure for the Drupal Social Initiative? Just like https://www.drupal.org/sandbox/frans/2023253 ?

  • Do we need a logo that is recognisable and is easy to add to a d.o project page. Maybe a mashup between the Drupal logo and Open Share Icon? If you play with this idea please do it as vector artwork.
  • Let's contact module maintainers and tell them about the Drupal Social Initiative and it's aims. Is g.d.o the best place for this? Probably!
