We hope you can join us for the next meeting of the Spokane Day-Time Drupal Learning and Co-Working Group!

When
Thursday, November 20, 2014, 10 AM to noon
Sign up!
Log in and click the "Sign up" button, if you think you will be coming. You will be reminded the day before. The meeting will be canceled if not enough people sign up by the end of the day the Monday before the meeting. You can always click "Cancel signup" at a later time if your schedule changes and you can no longer come.
Where
Spokane County Library - Argonne branch, 4322 N. Argonne Road, Millwood. We meet in the large meeting room - enter from the door out in the hallway before you go into the area with the books
What
Learning and "co-working" time - bring your laptop, or watch on the projector screen. Come with a project you're working on, a desire to improve Drupal in some way (documentation, programming, design, marketing etc.), a question about Drupal you would like to get an answer to, or a desire to help others with their projects and questions. Or just come and listen and observe.
Who
Everyone is welcome -- the only prerequisite is having some interest in Drupal. This group is usually 5-10 friendly people, with experience levels ranging from novice to expert, so you'll fit right in. Because of the size of the group, you will have time to share something you've learned, or get your questions answered, or both!

Note: If you'd like to have a meeting at another time that is more convenient for you, please feel free to organize it! See http://groups.drupal.org/node/161584 for a Wiki where people have listed when would be convenient for them to have meetings.

Sign up now! Log in and click the "Sign up" button if you plan to come, or probably will come, to ensure the meeting actually takes place. The meeting will be canceled if not enough people sign up by the end of the day the Monday before the meeting.

Attendance

Ok... I blew it last month, and just noticed the meeting is tomorrow. I am sorry but I am out of town and will not be able to attend. Thanks again for hosting these events!

Weather - still meeting!

Everyone please drive carefully to the meeting today!

The small amount of snow we are getting this morning is not making me think we should cancel the meeting -- but allow some extra time to get there.

Hello folks, I was very much

Hello folks,

I was very much looking forward to attending today and meeting you all, but I am in the middle of a very challenging move that I was planning to be finished with by now, and I just can't make it.

I hope very much to be able to attend your next meeting.

Meeting notes

  • Jon last month brought up a problem - he needed to post the user registration form to both Drupal and an external site. He showed a solution, which involved making a block with the PHP text format. Jennifer said she didn't like that too much... She suggested visiting https://www.drupal.org/node/756722 and finding the section on #attached and putting that in a module instead.
  • Jon also showed us a rule (Rules module) that runs during cron that exports a view. Jennifer suggested instead of using the "Execute PHP code" rule action, defining a custom action in a module (her book describes how to do that).
  • Jennifer showed a recent simple Drupal project, and we discussed CSS aggregation on admin/config/development/performance (you have to clear the cache if you make CSS changes in the theme, so they get pushed to the site).
  • This site had to somewhat match the design between this new Drupal site and an existing non-Drupal site, which Jennifer kind of did by hand with some minimal CSS. Later in the meeting, Scott asked about doing this. He plans to use the Bootstrap framework for his non-Drupal site, and the Bootstrap module for the Drupal site, as a shortcut for helping to make the markup similar. We all think this is a great idea.
  • We talked about accessibility for blind web users. Links should have titles and images should have alt text... and there are many other considerations. See http://www.w3.org/WAI/ for more on web accessibility.
-Jose is trying to build a photo gallery for the "Libby Collection" at the Museum of Arts and Culture. He had a question about why the content item (node) title wasn't being displayed. So we looked at his theme and ... it wasn't obvious how to fix it just for these pages. So the workaround is to create a separate field for "Display Title", and display that on the page.
  • We also went through how to create an "image type" field for this content type, using Taxonomy.
  • Part of the objective of the image collection may be to sell images (e-commerce). So if Jose is sure about this, the consensus was he will probably need to either hire someone to build a Drupal-based (Ubercart or Drupal Commerce module) section for this (starting with a Drupal content type will probably not work well, you need to start with the e-commerce system), or just build it in http://3dcart.com to start with (Jon really likes this one, excellent tech support).
  • Anyone accepting credit cards or processing forms that take credit card information needs to learn about PCI Compliance. Or shut down those forms immediately! Use PayPal for quick "make a donation" buttons.
