See http://blog.worldwidelexicon.org/2007/05/25/simple-localization-system-sls/
SLS is, as it suggests, a simple way to localize applications and websites. The system works as follows, and is easy to implement in a wide range of scenarios. Let’s imagine that you have a web user interface that you want to make available in many languages. With SLS, you simply do the following.
This will be demo'd at FooCamp (which Dries is also likely attending), and apparently there will be a Wordpress plugin soon. I have been thinking about a generalized translation hub, so this is of high interest to me. I'd like to have folks here read through and see what this means to Drupal.
Can Drupal act as an SLS server? (I think yes). Can it act as an SLS client? (yes!)
This really is in line with my thoughts about running t.drupal.org to help in doing distributed translation of Drupal...

is this something new? :)
If you have worked with localizing Java stuff or Firefox extensions, or anything similar, you already dealt with property files (tokens to text mapping), and this is admittedly not new as explained in the article. What seems to be advocated as new are the following:
So this does not seem to be new. In fact using property files offers you less tooling support then using Gettext stuff, you can only see one text version at a time (the one you are writing at the moment, by looking at the token only). Drupal does not use tokens so that the site works out of the box without the locale module overhead, and this does include the disadvantage that there is really no context of strings, so if you translate some stuff on the imaginary in place web interface, that same string might appear on other parts of the site, so the context you translated that in might not be the only one.
So to adapt SLS, we would need to convert to using tokens instead of strings, enforce the overhead of locale module (or a new locale module replacement) on all sites, English or not. Then deal with a less translation friendly file format which might have web based tooling support or not at that time (maybe we need to develop our own), so that you cannot work with the files on the file level, you always need the tool.
Is this the next big thing? :)
BTW I also commented on the possible controllability problems of the live translation update solution on the node linked above, which makes it a shaky choice for serious web sites, although it still is a very attractive solution for hobby sites, where tight control of the interface translations is not a requirement.
Thanks
Thanks for the review....that is exactly the kind of tire kicking I was looking for. Another one of those areas where we are "ahead"....but no one sees it.
in-place translation
I put more thought to in-place translation yesterday. Although I don't see ways to support SLS like in-place translation, with simple modifications to core, we can support a very similar way in contrib: http://drupal.hu/english/node/18 (patch here: http://drupal.org/node/151410)
Localization client
This is implemented now in Localization client (http://drupal.org/project/l10n_client). See http://hojtsy.hu/node/34 for more information and a video demonstration.
