Lets decide on common hashtag for all drupal related posts in India & Indian cities !!

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hello everyone,

I hope all of you are doing great at your end.

We all did our part in success of Drupal Camp Delhi (DCD) & thanks to everyone who attended it. Now lets move forward & organize or participate in more events, meetups & code sprint before we gear up for next camp in Delhi. (though this discussion is for everyone)

At DCD, I was asked by several new guys a question - How can we know upcoming event or meetups?

Though I answered them to track it by facebook page or group at drupal.org or meetup.com. But still I think, we can adopt some common hashtag at social media to track down all the drupal related posts which has something to do with Indian or local community.

It can help us a lot while searching at facebook or twitter for such upcoming things. As we all know, people are using these platform more than everything these days & facebook has also allowed hashtags, so a common hashtag can be used at both plateforms.

I can also come out with some suggestion, but before that I would like others to respond about this idea. Maybe later we can decide about some hashtag for other local community as well such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune etc.

But out first concern should be deciding about India !!

Thanks

Firstly, I think a simple hashtag like #DrupalIN, or even #DrupalIndia is perfectly fine. It is obvious, not very long and serves the purpose.

That said, I don't think this makes it any easier to find out about a new event. It is more likely that people will like a Facebook page or follow a Twitter profile rather than set up a running search on hashtag. The hashtag only helps in catching the discussions around an event and people might discover it only when other people are talking about the topic (the hashtag only helps the purpose mildly).

I still think the best way to find out about upcoming events and news is to follow the pages or on Twitter and subscribe to RSS feeds from website (if there is one). I am okay with setting up a common hashtag but I don't think it can or should be enforced.

We have everything here -

We have everything here - https://groups.drupal.org/india

Most regional events are copied on this India group as well.

The same is the reason you should always put up the event on gdo even if you are organising one through meetup.com etc

That is a nice idea. Let's go ahead with #DrupalIndia. Though # tags on Facebook are not such widely used as in Twitter but still we can generalise the tags for Indian events and also use the tags the local community uses for their events.

We must encourage this practice so that people can easily filter out while looking for the events on social media platforms apart from meetup.com or groups.drupal.org

Hashtag DrupalIndia

vaibhavjain's picture

For the hashtag, yes, #DrupalIndia should be good, but yes, that might not solve the problem completely.
I believe, we should promote people to join D.o and g.d.o, and further join India group and may be regional groups that are available.
We have the Drupal Global sprint weekend 2 days away, and whoever is new to drupal, we should ask them to join the groups, and promote the FB, Twitter links so that they are updated. I will be doing it here this time.
Meetup.com is another way we follow, but people are mostly not aware of it and other find it spammy.

Should we create a small simple steps to join groups and be updated for newbies ?
We can get that designed and may be circulate to people in form of flyers in the events. Also, we can edit it to add regional links. That way, we may be able to promote people to join d.o and groups and be updated.

Good suggestions @rajeevk @hussainweb, @saiTanay, @vaibhavJain & @singh_haneet.

This is going to be quite a crucial year for all of us as we lead upto Drupalcon India 2015/16.

I think its time we all work together as the Indian Drupal Community, commit on some of these exciting initiatives and pull together a great Con as the larger Drupal Community ( Indian & Overseas ) watches us this year.

+1 for #drupalIndia
( In fact we could pool together some funds and promote flyers, stickers, badges etc. for the larger united Indian entity in all Drupal events, activities & initiatives taking place throughout India this year and subsequent further years to come.)

+1 for promoting people to join D.o and g.d.o. ( essentially their local Group and the larger Indian Group at the least )

Please note that the database & activities on D.o gets referred to a lot when DA and others are trying to form their opinions about our ecosystem. I am not talking about manipulating the data on the system but just ensure that its being logged and tracked appropriately.

Thoughts?

Hi guys, Though I have

Hi guys,

Though I have mentioned meetup, event or camp in my post but my intention to put this discussion for deciding about hashtag had some other purpose as well.

I agree on using g.d.o for all meetup or event info. But sometimes we put 1-2 liner at twitter or a post on facebook about contribution of our fellow developer or a blogpost or something interesting which shows the strength of Indian community. In that case, using a hashtag can help anyone to filter it & feel the same.

We are trying to bring Drupalcon to India & if we keep showing our engagement with drupal at all social networks with any hashtag, it will help us in someway(at least I think so).

Just like we search all Drupal related post with #drupal, some hashtag(like #DrupalIndia) can boost our presence & show out strength.

We can't use these platform like facebook or twitter. They are not only for upcoming events of any kind..

+1 for united Indian entity in form of committee like @Piyush suggested, with some funds to promote community events such as code sprint, meetups etc.
If local community get at least some small fund to order atleast some refreshment for meetup or codesprint, it will encourage everyone(participant & organizer).
I have experienced it recently. Even Vijay also shared similar kind of experience in his last visit of DCD when I asked him to give me some advice on initiating this thing on regular basis. He promised me for arranging some fund from DA too for these expenditure such as subsidized pizza on code sprint day.

Lets decide on promoting use of d.o and g.d.o

I'm not sure about hashtags, lets use it to spread the right content. And it depends on individuals too.

I agree that we should take more and more action towards increasing the reach of d.o. and g.d.o. both to the current Drupal users and the students who are already starting to give Drupal a spin.

I'd take this on myself that whenever we organize a Drupal meetup in this region OR conduct a Drupal training, we encourage the audience to participate and join these groups.

Also, like Piyush said, this year could be a game changer for Drupal in India with DrupalCon now almost getting certain. So, the agenda should be focussed on increasing our reach.

I agree. This has been playing on my mind since some time as well. If I am not wrong, there was an earlier attempt but that did not work out for reasons I don't know. Let's make a fresh start!

Let's not mix this with discussions for hashtag (which might be a marketing thing). I think the current infrastructure we have in form of g.d.o (primarily) and meetup, social media, etc... is good enough. We just need more awareness, for which we need funds for better marketing and visibility. The entity would help us in that regard.

I am open to creating a new discussion for this entity and define steps we need to proceed.

Thanks Hussain. Let me take

Thanks Hussain.
Let me take this with DA and see if they can help us, to which I am sure they will.
