Planning DrupalCamp Code Sprint near Portland July 19th-23rd

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Update: We are still planning on holding this code sprint, but at different dates. We are actively working on lining up funding currently.

After talking with a lead Plone developer the other day who told me that code sprints are by and large hugely productive events for the Plone community I've decided to throw my hat in the ring to help organize one for Drupal.

Itinerary

The rough plan is to get a dozen or so serious Drupal hackers together for 3-5 days. Attendees should show up with a pretty good idea of what they want to work on and hopefully will be tackling problems that are best solved collaboratively. Every night we will go around and demo what's been accomplished during the day. If Drumm can come we'll have him help cook pancakes and big hippy/vegan dinners. We'll also make sure to have some fun outdoors.

Dates

The dates I've been throwing down are July 19th-23rd (OSCON is in portland the 24th - 28th).

Location

We are looking into renting a cabin near Mt. Hood or the coast equipped with wifi. If you have a better idea let us know.

Logistics

  • Bill F is going to help look for a suitable cabin to rent. If you want to help please contact him.
  • We are going to need to find some sponsorship to pull this event off. If you have any leads please contact me.
  • If you are interested in participating and / or organizing please leave a comment here or contact me.

I'm not up for 5 days

But I could probably make Fri-Sun. Sounds like fun. Closer to PDX is better for me; I have a lot of stuff going on. Perhaps Edgefield would be a good place for this?

the mountain

in the woods, by the mountain, is an essential part of the attaraction for me. my .02.

the veggie burgers are not part of the attraction for me and i will be bringing brontosaurus burgers for whomever wants one.

Dates

Have dates been settled? I'm late to the party. Will be in town 25th - 29th.

Is there a general attendee list for OS CON somewhere?

i'll second that

while out in the woods sounds nice for the out of towners, it makes it a lot harder to pick up locals.

What if...

We figured out how to carpool from PDX to the cabin? People flying in are going to need to get out to the cabin as well..

I would love to come

But that's a family weekend for me....

SOunds like a great idea

Not sure what i can lend as I am definitely not a drupal hacker, but i have been developing a list of drupal admin interface issues. Where would be a good place to post them? right now they are on our internal wiki as i collect and describe them.

wiki OK

moshe weitzman's picture

your wiki is just as good as anywhere else. now, you have to drum up support to implement them. that probably means posting on the development list.

Nate expressed interested in helping to sponsor the cabin. As regards transportation, I will probably just take my bicycle. Very much looking forward to seeing everyone in stumptown again.

Now what we need is a bunch of Druplicon intertubes for river floating.

Some rental options

Hello, folks,

I did a little digging on places in or around Hood River/Mt. Hood -- This location could be good because it's pretty central, offering good access to Portland (1 hour by highway), great windsurfing (in Hood River), as well as hiking and biking.

The first few rentals do not have wireless, which could knock them out of contention. The ones at the bottom of the list do have wireless in the house.

http://www.vrbo.com/84601 -- has internet, and is a good-sized property
http://www.vrbo.com/79600 -- has internet
http://www.gorgeres.com/accom1.htm -- this page has several properties that could fit the bill -- lucky #13 looks particularly nice

I'm thinking that interested parties can browse the listings and post comments.

So, check out the accomodations, and get on out to Portland!

Cheers,

Bill

Wireless not necessary

They need internet access, we can always bring a $40 router and/or some Airport Expresses to get coverage.

Awesome Bill

I heard back from another housing rental agency. Here is what they have:

http://www.hrvacations.com/homes/riverdelivered.htm
River Delivered has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, WIFI, great deck with a Mt Adams and river view. It's nice and close to downtown.

Riverstone Farm would be another excellent option, it's about 20 minutes drive from Hood River. It has 4 bedrooms/2 bathrooms, with WIFI. The living/dining room is very large,.This really would be a "retreat" as it is in a beautiful setting, right on the river with great views and it's own swimming beach on the Hood River.

Cloud 9 is another option, it's huge! A beautifully renovated church. Although this home is downtown it is very private and feels secluded. It also has WIFI.

Better dates: 7/22 - 7/25

mfredrickson's picture

I was looking at the OSCON pages and while the conference officially starts on 7/24, 7/24 - 7/25 are only tutorial sessions, which cost extra and may not appeal to Drupalers. It might make more sense to schedule the sprint to overlap with those days. If people want to attend the tutorial sessions they can, but others could be at the house coding. Also this prevents having a 2 day "hole" in peoples' schedules between the sprint and the start of the conference sessions.

any updates?

moshe weitzman's picture

hi guys. would be nice to firm up these dates for those who will be traveling for this.

FYI, i will likely be in Bay Area before and after this retreat visiting my wife's family. i am up for a day or two in San Fran for meetings, hacking, etc.

Final Dates?

Hi all, I would love to come to this from Michigan. What are the final dates/location. I would like to book travel plans.

Update

zacker's picture

We need to secure $2,000 in sponsorship to finalize the code sprint. If we can't raise the money we can try to do this on the cheap instead of in a cabin as originally planned. PSU has volunteered space for us at the University. If I can't get the sponsorship lined up in the next few days I will pursue organizing the sprint at PSU.

Dates?

mfredrickson's picture

Any thoughts on the dates? It looks like this will happen (either at PSU or some other location). If I can get a confirmed date, I can make my plane reservations.

Is there anything the community can do the help?

-M

I'll be there Monday

mfredrickson's picture

At around 2 or 3. If people want to start the hacking then, I'm game.

-M

will there be any sort of drupal camp

mwu's picture

will there be any sort of drupal camp (like vancouver) during or around the time of oscon? (training workshops, rather than coding sprints)

Roll it into OSCAMP/FOSCON

mfredrickson's picture

Since there hasn't been a lot of clear decisions made on this code sprint (which I still think is a great idea), what about rolling it into OSCAMP/FOSCON. I will be honest when I say I don't exactly know what these entities are. The wiki is fairly light on the details, but it seems like they will have space and wifi during OSCON, which is what we need.

(Surprisingly few) Details:

Good idea

zacker's picture

I will post something tonight about this when I can figure out more details.

I wont be there, but this is

I wont be there, but this is great motivation for me to move to Portland...
