Drupal meetups and follow ups

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

hello everyone,
I would like to know if there are any drupal events/meet ups to help mentor new contributions things like re rolling , making and back porting patches. I have previously been on one of the drupal core mentoring sessions that take place on the IRC channel #drupal and think it would be great to have such sessions aimed to new Ugandan contributers

you can talk to daniel

solomonkitumba's picture

you can talk to daniel mulindwa drupal.org username dcmul https://www.drupal.org/u/dcmul he can tell you the prerequisites, the meetups we have been organizing of recent have been for site builders not core contributors and module developers, but i guess doing that would be a nice idea. we can involve a couple of core contributors and see what happens

i dont have a special talent am just passionately curious

where are the meetings are held

nuwe's picture

Also, how about you organise one? I can share with you want you need and see if you can organise a Drupal Meetup. Its very easy. I can help you.

what is needed

nuwe's picture

Thats great I think I can organise one so what do I need

Great!

benjaminkyta's picture

You need the following;-

-Find a place that is easily accessible
-Get some money to buy a few snacks if the event ends before midday.
-If the event goes past midday, see if you can organise lunch. And if you cant, let the people know in advance. Ask them to carry lunch.
-Compose a list of things you wish to talk about
-Get people to help you speak about the different topics you lined up
-Organise a hands on. It normally keeps people engaged and fresh. + fun
-Create an events page with details and Invite people to come and have fun

Some resources

lwanga.matovu's picture

Hello Ivan,

Customised layouts with panels are really easy. Check out the links at the bottom.

I think you would also do best to: (1) understand the difference between layouts and styles and (2) check up on these modules: Panelizer and Fieldable Panes.

I also just finished my first project with panels and I am considering a switch from custom theme regions to custom panels.

The biggest advantage is that once you combine panels with the Search by Page module, you can index anything in the content area. This gives more accurate search results in their given contexts while allowing you to exclude any helper nodes which only appear in views and stuff.

Try reading these excellent guides:

https://www.drupal.org/node/495654
http://www.phase2technology.com/blog/creating-custom-panels-layouts-cont...
https://www.previousnext.com.au/blog/panel-layout-basics-free-you-cores-...

Good luck!

P.S. Next time you should create a separate post since your request for direction clearly diverts from the Original Poster's topic.

Blocks and View modes (Manage Display)

benjaminkyta's picture

Hi Ivan,

Glad you are making strides and having fun with Drupal.

Take good note of the resources Lwanga just shared. Go through slowly. And incase you are stuck, still, ask concrete questions.

In addition to that, Drupal out of the box comes with Blocks and view modes. View modes are found on the "Manage display" tab of each content type you create eg teaser, full content, you can even create your custom...

Anyway the point is, before you jump into panels, try and understand how blocks and view modes work. Those two are the basic building blocks for layouts in drupal.
Again, understand bit by bit. And remember, we are also here to help you :-)

Good luck

Wow!

lwanga.matovu's picture

@Ivan ... what Benjamin said is so true, especially if you do not have a firm understanding of blocks and view modes.

@Benjamin ... Wow! You just blew my mind with view modes. This is most definitely the leanest display mechanism. I will most definitely be using this on my next project.

View modes: https://www.commercialprogression.com/post/lean-drupal-content-view-mode...

Thanks.

thats why we seriously need a meet up

nuwe's picture

well wouldnt it be nice if we had a meet up to clear out such issues to give the do"s and dont's of learning drupal for the first time. from experience i believe learning drupal for the fiirst time is a bit overwelming and to be frankly honest when you are trying to learn one thing you realize there is something you should have learnt be4 and thats how drupal is.
nwe @Benjamin what if the meet up was a low expenditure meet up one that doesnt involve snacks, short and straight to the point

thank you!

thank you for your concerns, i i will try it out and i will let you know in the dew time

Drupal Training

dcmul's picture

Hi all

Allow me to remind you that we have Drupal global training Day is on 22-23 May. My suggestion is that as drupal Uganda we should organize a training for new and old developers.

If this thread is anything to go by, already have ideas on the things they wanna train on. Please suggest other topics we can train on.

Right now we are trying to find a venue for the training, and then an update will be posted.

Venue

samatech7's picture

Hi, thanks for the initiative. I think i can get a venue. Could you please get to me on the details of how long the sessions will be and how the snacks will be taken care of? Because the place i can get is a Restaurant and they have some restrictions as concerns snacks in the place.

Please let me know. You can get in touch with me via mail info@kampalawebdesigns.com or Skype: samatech3.

A great Journey begins with a step forward.

Thanks sanuel

dcmul's picture

Thanks Samuel, we are very grateful. Now we can worry about other things.

The plan is to have the events on Saturday morning 8.00 - 1.00 pm. Since its a restaurant it would be prudent to buy most of the snacks there, hope the prices are kind.

Venues, easy accessibility is vital. We are planning for about 30 people each with a laptop. I will bring the projector for presentations.

We need to have WIFI, but with that we shall improvise.

Hope that addresses your concerns. As soon as you confirm the venue..we shall let everybody know where.

Mountbatten as the venue

lwanga.matovu's picture

Mountbatten usually hosts these Drupal events. Perhaps you should talk to Benjamin.

can Mountbatten host

dcmul's picture

I am not sure that mountbatten can host us this year, but will talk to them to confirm.
For now, we can review Samuels suggested venue, and if its suitable, we can have the training there.

benjaminkyta's picture

Lets wait for Samuel to confirm. Am sure we can workout something.

I case someone else has a plan, would love to hear that.

Venue

samatech7's picture

Good morning, the place is called Laforet Muyenga Resort Gardens. i have talked to the manager and he says he can provide as with a very good discount on snacks so we could look at driving the discussion deeper. He also needs us to confirm the event early enough for proper planing. here is the map to the place is

here

Please let me know if there is anything else i have to find out.

A great Journey begins with a step forward.

Venue

I have talked to Solomon Opio of Outbox again. He heard me out. I am on my way there right now to confirm with him. We might have to use that place.

That place is more accessible and has almost everything we need.

Subject matter

lwanga.matovu's picture

As regards subject matter, do we have a schedule of the sessions and what will be discussed?

Or perhaps are there any special requests?

Personally, I would enjoy someone to discuss their usage of Display Modes towards attaining lean Drupal usage. This follows an earlier comment on this subject by benjaminkitya.

subject matter

nuwe's picture

@lwanga.matovu its good you asked for starters i believe the sessions should try to discuss fundamentals of drupal plus introduce new developers to the field and may be talk about how to contribute to core
thank God my prayers have finally been answered

outbox it is

dcmul's picture

hi.
For those of you that had issues with accessibility of the previously suggested venue, Outbox Hub on soliz house has agreed to host the event on Saturday 23 May 2015 from 10.00am - 1.00pm. Non the less we are grateful to Sam for the initiative taken in securing the previous venue.

We are developing a list of topics for the various sessions. You are free to suggest topic that you want presented on. We also encourage any one that wants to present to come forward.

The first session will be introducing drupal to beginners and new users. The other sessions will be a little bit more advanced.

We encourage you all to spread the word, to those people that might be interested in attending. Register for event
