The drupal university tour was a campaign we (solomonkitumba & benjaminkyta Drupal.org usernames) conducted across a number of universities in uganda including Makerere university Kampala, Kyambogo university , Mbarara university of Science and technology, Uganda christian University, Kampala international university, and it started in November of 2014 instead of October of 2014 like we had planned. due to the fact that the grant money came in later that we expected, giving us a little set back, which meant adjusting the original planned dates to fit into the university schedules.
Planning the University Tour was not an easy task, we encountered some hesitation from universities fact that we were trying to fit our schedules into their already planned curriculum but we started communicating with the department heads of the universities we wanted to train at. Some of them were hesitant at first, but eventually they accepted our proposal. “We started off by writing down the things we would need, and figured out from there how we would hold the training — what we would teach specifically, and so on.
We started off with Mbarara University of science of science and technology where we realized the biggest number of attendants, we almost had a number as big as 500 students in the first session, We then proceeded to Kyambogo University, Uganda christian University, and others followed,
We spent a day teaching the students about Drupal itself as a software. We taught them about making contributions to the development, such as by submitting code to the project.
We also emphasized the power of both the local and global Drupal communities, and discussed what a big benefit it is, We talked about how to share resources with people in the Drupal community, and how we can mobilize both locally and internationally to help people learn Drupal and organize training. After the university tour we had a balance of 50$ left that we used to continue the campaign to Data-mine technical institute so that more students benefit from the campaign grant.
We overall got around 2500 students up and running with drupal. We helped create university level drupal communities, which continue to invite us to help them learn more while they also help freshers learn.
