i am working on a drupal site for a vietnamese professionals group in the Washington DC area. Is anyone interested in helping me work on it?

I am quite amazed. Vietnamese can not read Vietnamese :-P

Can you explain your idea more clearly? Is there many Vietnamese professional in NY? What will your drupal group do?

haha. yes, i was born in vietnam but came to the US at the age of 2 so i never learned to read/write vietnamese. fortunately, i can speak it. but i am trying to reconnect with the culture, which is one of the reasons for this site.

i live in washington dc and there is a substantial vietnamese population here. i am the organizer of a vietnamese networking group. we meet every few weeks in a social setting to not only socialize and network, but to exchange stories and ideas and talk about our culture and heritage.

i already have the site up on drupal. it's a base installation with alot of the modules. you can see it at http://www.vietprofessionals.org/

i'd like to add customized features, such as:

  • a better "profile" page that allows the user to upload their picture and possibly their resume
  • a better custom theme
  • chat

there are other features that i have planned for this site, but i'd like to get to this point before i officially launch the site and publicize it to my friends. is there anyone who can help me implement these features?

Tri,

You should visitd Drupal handbooks. There are many basic and advanced tutorial for webmaster, themer and coder.

For user's profile, did you used profile -- a core module? I think it is good enough for you.
For theme customizing: http://drupal.org/handbook/customization

I visited your website and couldn't figure out what did you mean by a 'Vietnamese professional org.' neither does your topic requested? What type of 'professionals' are we talking about here? What are those requirements to be able to join your network? All i saw on your site were a few general news and Google's adsense. By the way, i used to hang around with friends almost everyday in Eden Center - nice place.

it is strictly a networking group for vietnamese working professionals. we meet in social situations, such as happy hours, at restaurants for dinner, and other public places. we've been using yahoo groups the past few years and i want to have a site that is more functional.

the reason i am on this drupal group is because i need some assistance with the site. i have the basics but i need some customization. can you help me? my email is tri.m.nguyen@gmail.com.

i go to eden center at least 4 times/week to eat bun bo hue :)

For this group and even on Drupal forum, you need to state a specific question, like what do you want to achieve (i.e., putting photo in member profile), what steps you already taken (i.e., I tried to installed such and such module), and what problem you have (i.e., the photo is broken image), and even the level of your coding experience (like beginner, or advanced user). Then it will save some asking time, and people will respond more, instead of running around like chicken without its head (heheh... I just learned this expression last week, gross, really!)

Anyway, if you don't know how to code or in a beginner state, and you want somebody to help you customize the whole site, it's much better to find an alternative CMS, or hire some paid services (since it's a professional website, I don't think you will have any finance problem). People here do not help much with complicate code or theme problem (from my experience).
