Building skynet: status of self-provisionning in aegir

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

We have talked a few times about how Aegir could be used to manage itself and while some work was definitely done in that direction, there's still some work remaining to attain the holy grail of self-provisionning, that is having aegir capable of installing, upgrading, migrating or propagating itself. This is the current state of affairs.

Where we're at now:

  1. we can migrate a hostmaster site using the hostmaster-migrate command, in the backend
  2. the UPGRADE.txt recommends the hostmaster-migrate process
  3. the install process is monolithic and creates a complete platform without the possibility of setting up only the backend (#711760: separate backend and frontend install process)
  4. we cannot yet provision-install hostmaster sites (see #711740: allow install of hostmaster sites in provision-install)
  5. we cannot yet migrate or clone hostmaster sites from the frontend (see #711746: allow upgrade of hostmaster sites from the frontend)

The meta issue to track all this progress is #454312 - self-provisionning support. There's also the self-hosting tag.

Once all this is done, we can change the project name to Skynet, a few expert systems, neural networks and new AI thingies, hook it up to some nukes, and watch the fireworks. ;)
