Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Where: Upside Collective, Downtown Albany (See their website for directions & information http://upsidecollective.com)
When: Thursday, January 28th, 5:30-8pm
What: Lean, Collaborative User Research With Dani Nordin (joint event with Albany UX Group)

Agenda:
5:30 - 6 pm: chat, munchies (thanks to Albany UX!)
6 - 7:15 pm: Lean, Collaborative User Research:
Dani Nordin, a Massachusetts native, will be joining us via Google Hangouts.

Many teams insist they have no time or budget for usability testing, even if they're convinced of the benefits. But what if you could find ways to create, implement and report on usability issues quickly and collaboratively?

In this session, UX designer and researcher Dani Nordin will outline the process she's developed at two separate companies to bring user-centered design practices into an Agile product team. You'll learn techniques to rapidly benchmark your user experience, test and report findings, and align stakeholders on critical usability issues.
Some of the things we'll cover:

Aligning with stakeholders on research goals;
Collaborative test planning;
Unmoderated vs. moderated testing: which one to use when?
Lean usability reports;
Balancing qualitative insights with quantitative measures (analytics, surveys, etc.)

This presentation is for you if you:
- work in an Agile or Lean product team and want to include user-centered design, but can't "find time for research."
- want to learn quick ways to understand how your actual target users experience your product (not people at Starbucks!).
- know there are problems in your current experience, but can't get stakeholders to buy into fixing them without more data.

7:15 pm: Mix and mingle with Drupalers and UX peeps

Important Notes

You must use the sign-up button below (or the UX Meetup sign-in http://www.meetup.com/albany-ux/events/228202269/) because Upside Collective is in a secure building. We need to have people's names at security so that you can be let into the building to attend the meeting.

This is different than our normal effort to have our meeting on either the last Monday or the last Tuesday of the month. In February we will be back to Monday.

Please note this meeting notice may evolve as more information comes along.

Thanks everyone - looking forward to seeing people!

Hi All, I am looking forward to meeting some of the Albany Drupalers for this upcoming meetup. Can someone send me the details for the google hangout?

Thanks

In person at Upside Collective or Google Hangout

Hi Vish56!

Hopefully you can join us in person at Upside Collective and mingle with Drupalers and UX people. But if you can't make it to downtown Albany, then I believe that we will be sharing the Google Hangout information later this week and will update the meeting notice at that time.

Cheers!

I will try to attend. It is

I will try to attend. It is quite a ride from queensbury. However, a Google hangout would be very convenient for me. Thanks

I wanted to get to the Meetup here and attend. I am trying to network.

I couldn't find parking.

richardhutnik's picture

I couldn't find parking near the Upside venue. Jeff Dunham was performing, so the lot was full (plus parking was like $10+). I couldn't find anything else at all, and lost track of where Upside is located. I am not going to be able to make any meetings at Upside, unless I can sort out parking, etc...

Future Drupal gatherings

goldieashe's picture

Good morning Richard,

I'm sorry that you made the trip to downtown Albany and weren't able to find parking. Parking frustration is one of my pet peeves.

Our Drupal gatherings usually meet on either the last Monday or Tuesday of each month. Going forward we'll make a point of checking area events for proposed dates. To that end, our next meet up is expected to be on Monday, February 29th and luckily there are no Times Union Center events that evening.

Usually, with having the meetings at 5:30, we hit the "sweet spot" when people are leaving downtown and there are often parking spots right in front of Upside Collective on State St.

Also, we are always open to alternative suggestions and offers for locations. As a group of Drupal enthusiasts looking to chat about anything Drupal we are grateful for the generosity of places like Upside Collective and Zone 5 to let us use their spaces after hours. The more places we can meet that are centrally strategic for attendees, the better.

Warm regards,
Meredith

Parking : Alternatives

I imagine parking in that area is going to be an ongoing problem given events, etc. For anyone who's not opposed to doing a bit of walking, there are almost always spots available on the other side of the plaza, on Swan St. (Near El Mariachi).

It's about a 10min walk to 80 State St. per Google, but I think it's probably less than that.

Once I get comfortable with

Once I get comfortable with parking there, I will consider being able to make meetings. Until then, I am going to have to pass.

Overit media is a Drupal shop

tomatkins's picture

Hi all - not necessarily a solution to the parking issue, but I met with Dan Dinsmore of Overit Media which is up on New Scotland ave. (before St. Peters Hospital) and they are a drupal shop as well... If the group is interested I can talk to Dan about having one of our monthly meetups up there (say if there is a concert going on at the TU) Just throwing up my 2 cents ;-)

OverIT has an awesome office,

OverIT has an awesome office, could pass a collections plate around for the meetup if they still have pews- hehe.

I like Upside though, and for what its worth never had a issue even with the events. Maybe for the UX group? If you could ask them what the capacity is.

Re: Presentation Recording

Hi everyone, unfortunately there were a few technical difficulties with the recording during the event- so its not available. I have posted the slides which can be found here:

Regarding Parking

mgarrison's picture

I can work on having some better parking instructions for the next meeting at Upside, I do agree that it is a pain especially with an event like last night so on those nights having other options does make sense.

We are very happy to host here at Upside be we do know there are drawbacks.

I am also hoping to have the room better suited for hosting events with all the technical and logistical requirements taken care of for next time.

Thanks to Jason and Meredith

I just want to send a HUGE thank you to Jason and Meredith for all they've done these past many years putting together these meetings, arranging logistics and agendas. It's a lot of work (which is probably why so few people do it) and they do it solely out of the goodness of their heart and generosity. Takes a lot of time, effort, and out-of-pocket expenses on their part. And it benefits all of us. And likewise to Upside Collective, Zone 5, St. Peter's Hospital and any other venues that have kindly hosted our events -- again through their own goodwill and generosity -- over the years. There are always issues with any kind of event (whether it's location, date, time, WiFi, comfort of chairs, or the relative hopiness of the beer served or not served, . . . whatever). But I know that Jason, Meredith, Upside Collective, Zone 5 and St. Peter's have always been more than accommodating and welcoming. So I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say thank you. Great job everyone. We appreciate it.
