Hello,

I am a Technical Architect working at Acquia who has attained the Drupal Grand Master certification. I teach a career-changing Drupal development course at Debug Academy in the greater Washington D.C. area. I wanted to share that our next ‪Drupal‬ ‪developer‬ class starts this November. The class is part time (twice a week - 1 weekday evening, 1 weekend morning) and spans 3 months. For the first time, the class will be offered in a hybrid online / in-person format. Select the locations at which you can attend class on the application form. Apply at our student-built website http://DebugAcademy.com - the clear path to a new career.

As a direct result of taking our class, our graduates have received (and accepted) job offers from well known development companies such as Acquia, Taoti, Mobomo, Booz Allen, and more. Furthermore, each of those companies has given job offers to students who had no development experience prior to enrolling in the class.

By taking this class and dedicating the appropriate amount of time to learning its material, you will be in great shape for moving to the next phase of your career. The majority of our students are referred by previous graduates, which we are very proud of.

Additionally - this is the first semester which will have two Drupal developers to help students learn the material in every class. With our small class sizes and personalized curriculum, there is no better way to change your career.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them.

Take the plunge into an exciting new career!

Take it if you want to become a Drupal Developer

I took this course from October 2015-January 2016. At the time, I was a full time Environmental Scientist looking to get into the software development field. I had no prior programming/coding/development experience whatsoever. In the class, I learned all aspects of Drupal Development including Git Version Control, site building, theming, html, css, php, creating custom modules, pushing and merging code, and more. The course I took ended on December 27th, 2015 and I was interviewing with Drupal Agencies/Firms in the weeks following that. In early February of 2016 (1 month after the class ended), I began my first day as a Drupal Developer for Taoti Creative (www.taoti.com), a digital strategy and web design firm in Washington, DC.

I have been a Professional Drupal Developer for the last 8 months and have worked on over 20 Drupal websites ranging from commercial to government and nonprofit clients.

I've recommended this class to everyone wanting to become a Drupal Developer because:
1-In the class, I learned and developed the skills required to change career paths and become a Drupal Developer.
2-Not only is the instructor extremely knowledgable in the Drupal field, but he also has connections to a lot of web/drupal development companies in the area that are eager to hire!

I took this course the first time it was offered. With Ashraf's awesome guidance, curriculum, and course format, I landed a job at Acquia within a couple months of completing the course. The curriculum cuts right to the chase and uses only industry best practices to get the material across. It is extremely hands-on and will leave you ready for more than just job interviews.

Since completing the course, I have received the Drupal 7 Developer and Front End certifications, and most recently the Drupal 8 Developer certification. I've worked on some of the largest sites in the word with huge user bases, all while using knowledge gained from Debug Academy. Highly recommend! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions!

New Career

I took this class October 2015. Prior and at that time, I was a Background Investigator, conducting investigations for those trying to obtain security clearances. Absolutely nothing code related. I had never written a line of code but was compelled to try the class, after a friend encouraged me to.

The three month, two day a week class (at 3 hours per class) was taught by Ashraf Abed, a freaking awesome human and Acquia technical architect (which is fancy, in case you didn't know.) It is made for beginners, or just people wanting to learn Drupal. It is tailored for busy people and you're given more than enough time to complete assignments and projects.

You start with the HTML/CSS basics and get into PHP and Drupal, which if you're unfamiliar, is an amazing content management system. You can do SO much with a Drupal site. It takes a little getting used to, but when you get the hang of it, there's really so many incredible possibilities to add to your site.

The best part was we were working for actual clients, so it wasn't "type this line here," put that into CSS and what do you get? These were actual clients waiting for their site to be ready! So we were coding in an actual work environment, with a much more patient supervisor. Not only that, for every task we completed, it was worth more than our time! Each task that was successfully completed and added to the site was put towards tuition, so that was an awesome additive.

Our class became a team and not only did I get the proper knowledge and experience to add to my skill set, I got a new job! An actual Drupal job. It is an awesome feeling to learn something new and actually do something with it. I love it.

Definitely would recommend to anyone looking to learn to code, get into Drupal 7 or are just bored with their lives and want to learn a new, profitable, highly desired skill! (Seriously, employers are really looking for Drupal people now.) Get in on it!

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I really appreciate it.

In case you're considering taking this class, I wanted to add a little more specific information:
- Classes will be approximately 50% online, 50% in-person
- Classes will be held twice a week, Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings
- The in-person classes will be held Sunday mornings from 9am-12pm
- The online classes will be held on Wednesdays from 7:10pm-10:10pm
- The in-person class will be in Tysons Corner at a metro-accessible location

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly. The first class will be on October 30th (a Sunday), and students are completing optional pre-class assignments and finalizing enrollments right now, so it is best not to wait longer.

A Software Engineer's perspective

mabdullah2010's picture

I studied Computer Engineering in school and have been working full-time as a Software Engineer since 2010. I always had a curiosity for learning about web development, but had not decided on a pathway into the field until I heard about Debug Academy. Since I have a technical background, I had some apprehensions about paying for a class instead of just trying to learn it on my own. Taking the class ended up being one of my best career decisions.

I took the course in October 2015 with Ashraf as my instructor. As the other former students above me have said, the curriculum is thorough, and Ashraf’s deep understanding of all of the topics was quite evident. Even though the class is not full-time, it is not setup like a boot camp where the goal is to memorize how to handle a handful of specific scenarios. Instead, he provides a thorough explanation, demonstration, and set of practice exercises of all the tools needed to be a successful Drupal Developer. He teaches in a way that conveys a deep understanding of the material, so students can easily build upon what was learned, as opposed to only being able to regurgitate information. At the same time, he’s able to simplify even the most complex concepts, bridging gaps in understanding.

Prior to the course, I had no knowledge of HTML, CSS, PHP, Git, or Drupal. A couple months after the course, I interviewed at Acquia and was submitted for a Senior Drupal Dev position. Unfortunately, no openings were available at the time for that position, but a former student put me in touch with a site looking for a freelance Drupal developer. Since then, I have been working for them on the side. The class provided me with the knowledge and the connections needed to expand my career.

TL;DR: No matter your technical proficiency or prior experience, you will learn a lot in the class and it will help your career. Learning Drupal under Ashraf’s guidance will be a far smoother and worthwhile experience than trying to tackle it on your own, and more doors will be available to you through taking the course.

Definitely Recommend This Course

I took this 3 month course without having any programming experience before this. Within a month, I was working on a real client website for homework, and after the course, I continued working on client projects. I learned HTML, CSS, Git, Drupal site building and theming, and PHP. Ashraf is a great teacher and really works with students to ensure their success. As long as you are determined and committed, you can succeed in this course and transition to a career in Drupal. This isn't just a Drupal development course, but it is THE Drupal course you should take if you want a career as a Drupal Developer. I didn't realize how much fun I would have coding websites and how this skill can be diversely applied. My goal is to work with nonprofits and social impact groups to empower them through digital technology so that they can make a positive difference.
