Workshop vs. Camp

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

So, people have been asking about this. Could we perhaps make a decision to always use the phrase "Drupal Camp" to refer to free, community run events (like BarCamp, DemoCamp, etc. etc.) and use the phrase "Drupal Workshop" for paid training events?

I think this will help explain the two conferences. Or? Other names? Disagree?

Agreed

I think the main problem is that there is no definition for what is a "Drupal Camp". In fact, the very first Drupal Camp (in San Francisco) was a paid event. That being said, there probably should be something to differentiate that paid stuff from the free stuff.

The problem that we are having with Lullabot's workshop training is that there's the inherent question: "Is this a Drupal Camp?" I did my best to answer that question pre-emptively at the bottom of our workshop descriptions. The truth is that our workshops are going to be conceptually similar to Drupal Camp S.F., but probably not so similar to a meet-up style Drupal Camp where volunteers get up and talk.

And isn't Adrian charging for the DrupalCamp in Johannesburg? The truth is that it's very difficult to organize these things without charging something. It ensures quality and preparation from both the trainers and the attendees.

So my view is this: if we leave it to the market, Drupal Camp will mean whatever people want it to mean -- but I'm all for coming up with a definition.

having no definition is the point...

when we first starting discussing an un-conferneceing of drupal events, the notion was free, as in free to be whatever the organizer & community wanted. if we are looking for historical references, 2005 civicspace day and barcamp were cited. though the notion of charging came from the ideal of paying an instructor to design coursework that could be replicated at other drupal events (ie product development).

BUT now it appears we have reached a philosophical line in the sand...

i'm all up for viewing paid engagements/events to be called "workshops," as long as the fall under a certain framework. i think jeff is doing a great job creating a solid foundation for others to follow.

i also believe that a camp should continue to be undefined and free to be what the community wants.

The "camp" name has always been related to the BarCamp philosophy of free, open, and organized (or not) however the people putting it together decide.

I'm not saying we have to pick, just reporting back that I've had some private emails asking if a particular event is free or not.

I think we'll happily let things evolve, and individual organizers can think under which category they fall.

Hrmm...

Sounds good to me. I think we are confusing people by having all real world Druapl events called camps.
