Getting Started with a basic 960 Grid theme

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

So I attended the Even More Themes session at Florida Drupal Camp and I was intrigued by the concept of the 960 Grid. I like having a compliant, well formed theme to use but I am having some trouble getting started. I grabbed the ninesixty theme and installed. I am trying to create a sub theme (new concept for me) based on that theme but I am not sure where to start. I have spent the last three days reading up on the web and I even tried using some CSS and HTML generators but the page I created to test the CSS doesn't seem to work properly. Pretty sure I did something goofy.

I know I have to create a folder for the sub theme and have the info file and the assorted tpl.php's that are needed but I am not sure what to do with the CSS files. I 'm pretty sure I need to leave the files in the framework folder alone. So my question is where do I start as far as CSS and the page.tpl.php file go?

Any pointers?

.info file

The general idea of a sub-theme is that unless you override it, the base theme files will be used. To add your own css file to your sub-theme, you'll need to add a line to your theme's .info file (http://drupal.org/node/171205 - see the "stylesheets" section).

For your page.tpl.php, just copy the one from the base theme into your subtheme and start making changes.

You definitely want to leave the files in the base theme alone.

Here's a good slideshow about getting started with Drupal and 960: http://www.slideshare.net/fourkitchens/accelerated-grid-theming-using-ni...

If things aren't looking they way you expect, be sure to try clearing the cache first!

Thanks for the link, Mike. I am going to take a peek at the slide show. I will work on converting my personal site over the weekend. See what I can come up with. This ought to get interesting...

UPDATE:
As it turns out, that slide show was just what I needed to get my head wrapped around the concept. I started to convert a very basic them I had designed and so far so good. Thanks for the heads up. I managed to find a great web page that had a ton of links on it. All related to 960 and grid based design. Helped me out a lot too. Here is the link in case anyone is interested:
