For our April meetup we'll look at a case study of of a Drupal 7 to 9 migration. 420Intel.ca is a news aggregate site for the cannabis industry. The existing site is an older Drupal 7 site, with a lot of unused configuration. The site is actively updated with multiple content items added daily.

Our challenge for this project was to:

  1. Find out what parts of the site we want to keep and migrate only those parts
  2. Manage an ongoing migration while merging new content for the new site with ongoing new content from the old site
  3. Incorporate a CDN for new and existing images

During this presentation you will see:

  • A basic content-only migration from Drupal 7 to 9
  • How to migrate just the parts of the site we want to keep (most nodes, taxonomy, user accounts ) and not the things we don't (blocks, menus etc.).
  • Using migration groups to prevent configuration from being overridden when updating the migration (e.g. field settings).
  • Migrating images from Drupal 7 Media to Drupal 9 Media Entities
  • How to add new content during the migration for staging without conflicting with the ongoing migration (i.e. using the same nid)

Bonus:

  • Our experience using a pre-built theme
  • How to set up a CDN using Cloudfront + S3 for migrated images (this was tricky)

Presenter: Megan McDermott, Senior Front-End Developer at Woolwich Web Works
