Help on a community blog. Drupal guru?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

We started a Progressive politics blog a couple months ago, and its growing fast! (caught us off guard) We have come to the place where we are kind of stuck with the nuts and bolts of what we want to do to build it into more of a community.

We need some advice, and some guidance through some module additions, views and settings. We have managed thus far, but are now getting a bit frustrated with the more complex items.

Our site is a labor of love, and its an all free site to access. We can't pay, but we can say that any help is GREATLY appreciated, and we can also say that it would be of help towards some great progressive causes and ideas.

Checked out your site

I found your post today and checked out your site. I'm in the process of setting something up along the same lines.

I know this is a little late since this was posted quite a while back, but I have one suggestion for your site concerning registration. The basic math question during registration is fine, as would be captcha or many other methods of weeding out the non-humans. However, I think you're going to lose a lot of potential members and posts by making them wait for their request to join to be approved. People come see your site for the first time, and find an article that catches their attention (like I just did). They read the article, and have something that they JUST HAVE TO comment on (like I did). They sign up for an account thinking they will be able to comment on the article (uh...yeah), and then they get a confirmation email saying that their account is pending approval. Then...they go somewhere else (like I just did). I may or may not get back to make that comment that I wanted so badly to post.
Now, if I had received an email stating that my account has been created and I could now log in, I would have gone ahead and posted my comments, and checked the box to notify me of any further comments posted to this article (if available), and would have come back every time someone else commented on it.
