Report back from Wisconsin Drupal Meeting 1; mini-DrupalCamp at Social Forum?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Blake from DANEnet, Patricia and Sheldon from Center for Media and Democracy and myself (from Midwest Social Forum) met for about 2 hours at Michelangelo's. We spent much of the time introducing ourselves and our various projects, and got into some details about various modules and implementations we're dealing with. Apparently we're all fans of the mapping modules....

We actually spent most of the time talking about the Midwest Social Forum (new Drupal site that went live yesterday!). Initially, i brought up the idea of working with other folks to put together a workshop on social software, which would present Drupal along with some other tools out there that community orgs and social movements can make use of. The current proposal for that is located here: http://www.mwsocialforum.org/node/511.

Then, someone proposed using the Forum as a meeting place for a mini Drupal Camp that could draw from Chicago, Iowa, and maybe further. People felt that we might be able to get out 20-30 people, even with only six weeks' notice, especially if we can get some Core developers (Zack Rosen has already suggested he can make it).

I suggested that Thursday July 6 would be a good day, since it is set aside for retreats and caucuses (for example, there is one about water privatization, and another about youth organizing).

I can arrange to get a room or two set aside with overhead projectors for all day Thursday. However, since i am one of the few staff organizers of the Midwest Social Forum, i will be running around like mad dealing with logistical issues with the rest of the Forum, so i might only be able to attend half of the Drupal Camp, and i can't really take on the promotion of it.

I suggest we use this thread to discuss:

  1. Whether we want to make this happen or not
  2. What goals a miniDrupalCamp would achieve (i know very little about other Drupa lCamps)
  3. Who wants to do what.

Would love to participate

HI
I'd be happy to participate in this, either from the viewpoint of a Drupal developer with my consulting company, or from the group I'm currently trying to put together, which is an organization of progressive bloggers and web site managers in WIsconsin (this is a very recent project), or as the owner of the Uppity Wisconsin web site.

I could bring along a video projector if that would be of any help.

There seems to be very little discussion going on here - is there much interest in doing a Drupal camp as such? I'd be glad to help with organization but time's getting pretty tight.
