I had a Windows Netbook (ASUS eeePC with 2MB) atFlorida Drupal Camp. Like many other participants with similar equipment, I could not install Acquia Drupal. Acquia's stack still hangs up and will not install on my machine. That's a mystery. However, I had success with the WAMP stack from http://www.wampserver.com and a download of Drupal. I followed the instructions from http://learnbythedrop.com/drop/95 and it went well. I had to change default download version of PHP to get the exif module to work, but that's easy to do with that WAMP stack. Enabling the Rewrite Module for Apache is also just a click with that stack. Perhaps the same will work for other netbook owners.

I wasn't happy with the
I wasn't happy with the Acquia install too much. I prefer the base install. I have not had to use a local machine to develop. I use my web host account to do it. But since I was thinking of picking up a NetBook, this info might come in handy.

satisfied with performance?
@susan, have you been satisfied with the performance of drupal running on wampserver on your netbook? I've tried xampp and acquia-installer on my acer aspire one and while both ran they were very slow. i was prepared for it be a little slower since this is a netbook (yada yada) but most every script took a minute to render and some took many minutes so i gave up. i've installed ubuntu using wubi and using it with the acquia-installer to play around with a local version of drupal - this runs super fast even though its still a netbook. trying to understand now if the problem is due to windows os or to the stack running on windows...

It's been OK. I found it a little slow when I wanted to enable the same modules as another site. I had to do that in chunks. After that it seemed to run fine. I wasn't using Acquia-Drupal though -wamp installer and Drupal.
it is working great
I have installed wampserver, downgraded php, and installed drupal. it is working so much better than any of my other attempts with other stacks. even admin/build/modules
