Please speak English or choose another group

Walt Esquivel's picture

Dear fellow Drupalers that choose to speak a language other than English on the "Social Networking Sites" group:

My native tongue is Spanish, the primary language of my parents. I love my Spanish language, as I'm sure you love yours, but I don't waste my English readers' time by posting Spanish comments to the "Social Networking Sites" group or, for that matter, any other English group here on this web site. I stick with English because that's the main language spoken on a majority of the groups here.

With all respect, please stick to English or, better yet, speak whatever language you want but do so on a group that caters to that specific language. The community, including myself, will thank you for respecting us in that manner.

Furthermore, you will look and sound more professional if your post on "Social Networking Sites" has something remotely to do with this group's focus (social networking). Again, it's about respecting others' time.

Thank you for your kind attention in this matter.

I respectfully disagree

I do not feel that anyone should be required to "speak" a specific language (especially in Malaysia group). In fact, I would have to say that "English" is rarely spoken on this site anyway; it seems more like geek speak most of the time :-)

Update: Perhaps this is more of a cross-posting issue, both for the original post and the reply. Interesting note: for me, if not logged into g.d.o. and click on the comment link from a "Social Networking" email then I am taken to the Malaysia group post by default. If logged in, I go to the Social Networking group post. This sets a significant context for both posts and comments.

Markus Sandy

I disagree with your disagreement (respectfully)

Walt is completely right. The whole point of having groups in the first place is to facilitate communication between people who share a similar interest or area of focus. For this communication it is essential that everyone understands each other, or at least tries to make themselves understood. To speak a language that most people in the group don't know defeats hte whole purpose; it's the equivalent of whispering a secret in the middle of a group. Walt already said that people are welcome to start new groups with a different language base. Markus says that this post was actually crosslisted with a Malaysia group, where it makes more sense. So, perhaps the issue is simply why these posts are also being sent to everyone in the Social Networking Group, and that sould be rethought. But, if this message is just saying happy ramadan, as some of the English follow-ups say, than it seems fine and appropriate to say in another language. A further question though might be whether we need or want posts here saying merry Christmas, happy easter, and best passover wishes. I am not going to jump into that mess, but I am sure many here would say we don't--that this is for social networking-drupal communications, not a holiday missives consortioum.

Apologize to the others.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't realize that this message is also tag "Social Networking Sites". That's why it comes out in both places. By right, it shouldn't have.

Since Azhar is also a member of "Social Networking Sites" group, he can check where this message belongs to.... (I have now unchecked). At least we learn more about OG, aren't we? By default, the OG audience will only check the current group where it originated from. I presume, Azhar mistakenly or unintentionally checked for ""Social Networking Sites".

BTW, as for "Malaysia group", I would say, that we can speak whatever language we want ...asalkan kita faham (as long as we, malaysian understand).

Thank you for your comment.

It shouldn't matter...

MelBoy's picture

Well said najib,, A language is just a tool of communication, so "Walt", may be at that stage najib didn't want to communicate with you, ,,,kidding...All languages are to be treated with respect,,,,my own opinion,,,,e.g ten years down the track, Chinese may be a UL(Universal language) so that would mean that we would have to communicate in Chinese, or we will still be able to use english, malysian, or any other language in our groups as a toll of communication in between specific group lines. No disrespect to you, but don't we believe in a free communication system,,, regardless.........

OR

OR dear najibx, plz include an english translation of your conversation for walt, so he can understand whats going on in here, in case he has a trip to Malysia in the near feature, and have to ask some thing from a local.
