Job postings here and consideration for the job candidates

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I hope I'm not out-of-turn by posting the following sentiment. After having responded to a few solicitations for resumes or contracts here and not having received a single response, I would strongly encourage the companies making these solicitations to consider the time spent by candidates and the courtesy of a response, outside of the pro-forma "we got your submission" kind of boilerplate.

I expect that kind of flippancy from craigslist, not the Drupal community.

I'm blessed with enough work, but I imagine for those in more dire or urgent financial situations, that kind of time spent (and lost, really) can be a taxing hardship. Frankly, giving the batting average here, I don't expect to take these solicitations seriously going forward. I do say that with all respect due to companies that give this process more careful consideration.

I would tend to disagree

I get a good portion of my work from the GDO job board and CL. I've not run into to too many situations where I didn't get a decent response when looking for some extra work. I actually think the GDO job board works pretty well since most of the Jobs posted there are specifically looking for Drupal Talent.

Just my $.02 on my experience with it.

You're a rock star

Screenack's picture

Adam, you're a rock star. I lack the purview to say that my experience is how it is for everyone and I apologize for any misunderstanding. It just may be that my curriculum vitae is so substandard that what I'm getting is also known as "charitable silence." Yet, while I'm glad that you have had a positive experience, maybe I'm not alone? And, if I am alone in this experience, I'm sorry if I raised a non-issue.

Concerns about your CV

afreeman's picture

I'm not intimately familiar with your credentials so I can't comment on the potential relationship between them and not hearing back from potential employers. However, I can tell you that if you have any concerns at all that your marketable Drupal skills are thin on the ground or you're having a hard time proving you've got chops this is very easy to fix.

Drupal Technical Writing:
Spend some time adding/polishing documentation on d.o and then add "Contributes Documentation" to your user profile.

Module Development:
Post patches to existing modules and note the projects you've contributed on your user profile. For extra credit (and the groovy "Projects" display at the bottom of your user profile that tells everyone you have a CVS account) find an abandoned module and put in a request to the webmaster's queue on d.o to become the new maintainer. If that's not to your liking volunteer to co-maintain a module. This could be as simple as asking around in #drupal to see if anyone is looking for some help.

Design:
Want to prove you've got theming chops? Contribute a theme to d.o. or help maintain an existing one (CVS account required).

Site Administration/Implementation
Write a case study for your biggest site accomplishments and post it up on d.o.

Regardless of what aspect of the community you're interested or trying to make money off of, there are simple steps you can take to incontestably demonstrate your skills to the entire Drupal community and prospective employers.

I like it

Front-loading my credentials on-line, rather than spending time crafting a carefully-worded direct response, makes a lot of sense. I would have thought that directly addressing specifically identified requests would be more effective, but I also thought that home ice delivery would be smashing business.

Thanks!

Words of Wisdom for sure!
That's some good stuff afreeman!
I frequently speak at various Camps, Cons, HackFests, LinuxFests, etc. I know that I am often in front of the Future RockStarz of Drupal. I'm going to have to add all of your points to my slides.

The kind words are much appreciated!

Maybe an additional line to the JOB POST PAGE

dougvann's picture

I haven't experienced the issue but it does alarm me that Kyle says his batting average is in a slump. We certainly don't want the GDO job posts mimicking, in ANY way, Craigslist.
As a GDO Maintainer I am open to the idea of adding another item to the list on the JOB ADD FORM
It currently reads:

  • Drupal specific jobs only.
  • Please post your job listing to no more than 4 groups. If you post to more than 4 groups, you will get one warning, after which you will have your posting privileges revoked.
  • Please understand that your post is read by many people via RSS feeds and various web sites. Please be sensitive to this when you post, as you might be sending the same job listing four times to the same person. They probably won't want to apply if they receive that kind of spam.
  • Please, do not post the same job multiple times, even if it is over the course of months. Instead, edit your existing job post.

We already have a lot of guidelines to steer posters into a more acceptable job posting. I wonder if it's worth adding a line that might go like this.
The individuals who respond to your Job Post will appreciate your courteous notification of their status in your consideration process

I don't know... That sounds a bit clunky to me.
Do we need anything? If we DO need something can some one word it better than I?

We can flesh the idea out here and I'll run it past the other maintainers.

Thanks,

maybe something like this?

kbell's picture

Hi Doug!

Maybe something like this would work?

"Everyone's time is valuable. Please promptly and courteously notify all responders to your Job Post of their status in your consideration process."

Not much different from yours, which works just fine too. :)

Thanks to everyone for the great info in this post - it's disturbing to hear of Kyle's experiences, but definitely the way to improve response is to follow Adam's sage advice. And thanks to Doug for proactively addressing the issue!

Cheers,
