I'm trying to set up a linux box to take care of our stream (and maybe our archiving too, but one thing at a time), and I've tried a few streaming applications but none of them quite seem to work.
ices0 isn't available for ubuntu
darkice isn't compiled with MP3 support
MuSE looks pretty cool, but when I tried it I only get options for OGG streaming, not MP3 (and lame is already installed)
... I'm starting to give up here :(
Any recommendations? I really don't want to have to compile; I've never managed to do it (and I just tried with MuSE and straight away got error messages I didn't know what to do about)

freebsd is a great platform
freebsd is a great platform for streaming. you can install these apps thru freebsd ports and it all "just works". on linux distros you typically have to compile these apps manually.
i agree
the couple of times i've tried to get the streaming stuff setup on linux i've ended up pulling my hair out. i end up having to get a gcc package installed so i can build the rest of the tools.
I think that recompiling
I think that recompiling with mp3 support for Darkice is your best bet, then there is darksnow which is a GTK gui for it.
There is also internet dj console or idjc which works good if you are streaming live but has a tendency to lose connection if used as a streamer.
Somax is a pretty rad scheduler, but you'll probably have to compile it or something along those lines.
somax?
robbt, what's somax? got links?
I recompiled darkice,
I recompiled darkice, following instructions I found via Google -- and it's ACE!
Not only does darkice stream, it also archives!
I'll post a howto later in case anyone's interested -- but basically, the darkice docs explain how you can use darkice as an archiver. You just send a signal to the darkice process every hour and that moves the current mp3 file over to the archive. I've left it to run for the weekend to see how it works....
