Veracium is an social networking/bookmarking/blogging site that attempts to safeguard two fundamental human rights: privacy and free speech. Essentially:
- We will never give your personal information to anyone.
- You control what personal information you want to make public. Same holds true for the content you produce.
- You can delete your account at any time. If and when you do, all your information will be wiped clean from our system.
- We will never display 3rd party ads.
The decision to use Drupal makes sense for us because:
- Using Drupal has saved us from having to re-invent the wheel. With this framework, we get content, user and taxonomy management features out of the box.
- We can establish a symbiotic relationship with the Drupal community. We can leverage their technology as the foundation of Veracium, and as we develop new modules to provide more features for our users, we can give something back to the community.
- We never considered the use of proprietary software because not only does it go against our philosophy, we did not wish to fall into the vendor lock-in trap.
We are using a bunch of contributed modules on top of the core Drupal modules. They are:
- Ajax
- CCK
- Content Profile
- ImageCache
- Invite
- Node Gallery
- Organic Groups
- Services
- Captcha
- User Relationships
- Views
We have had to customize some of the modules to meet our needs, espcially, with regard to fine-grained privacy. We are working on release them back to the Drupal community.
Drop me a line if you would like to be part of this project.
Even if you don't want to get actively involved, please let us know if you have any comments, criticisms, suggestions or general feedback to improve Veracium.
