Document management needed

I am looking for a module that will do the following:

  • Multiple uploads at once (drag and drop would be nice).
  • Directory browsing of these files or something similar.
  • Simple links for search engine crawling.
  • Incorporate Drupal security to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Ability to organize files by directory.

Does such a module or group of modules exist that will accomplish each of these tasks?

Hello, I use Drupal 5.3. It

Hello,

I use Drupal 5.3. It runs localy as an intranet. My server's power oblige me to limit the number of modules, or their complexity (no ubercart kind of module, no AJAX yet, ...). These suggestions are only mine. Please don't limit your search to them. Ask other people and look/try by yourself (necessary).

* Multiple uploads at once (drag and drop would be nice).

- Depending on what you'd like to upload, you'll find some modules which do that. Especially.
-* The Image.module does it through the contributed image_import.module : "simplify adding multiple images by importing images from a directory on the server." http://drupal.org/project/image Read the Readmes ans how-tos. The drupal admin help should contain some infos as well.
Yet, it seems that the module has encountered a too fast development due to the leading drupal 6 project. Thus I stuck to version 1.4 (current is 1.6). If you want such a previous version, change the version number in the URL path for download. I still had not enough time to report this problem.
-* The video.module does it as well. But I haven't used the video's own multiple upload module. And yet, no recent release will oblige you to patch yourself the module on a few issues. http://drupal.org/project/video Therefore, have a look at the issues. Be sure to have a good overview of the patch contribs before patching, if you don't want to loose some precious time. The handbook contains great support on How-to patch and make patch, depending on which platform you use.
-* Actually, I'm not sure about the upload.module's multiple upload possibilities...

-* Drag and drop is not such a feature of drupal yet. I wish it was.

* Directory browsing of these files or something similar.

Quite a few modules offer this functionnality. But none have convinced me. Generaly because of rendering delays or unsuitable UI (user interface). Have a look at the modules related to file management http://drupal.org/project/Modules/category/62 and medias http://drupal.org/project/Modules/category/67 (not quite sure to be exhaustive).

* Simple links for search engine crawling.

I'm not sure about what you mean.
Have a look at those modules in the "Search" category: http://drupal.org/project/Modules/category/105

* Incorporate Drupal security to prevent unauthorized access.

I myself encounter problem about users and roles access. It is supposed to be implemented by the user module... http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/user

* Ability to organize files by directory.

A simple and good module is the uploadpath.module http://drupal.org/project/uploadpath. The maintainer of the module has recently released a new version of the module allowing a very useful per-nodetype upload paths feature. It is as well customisable thanks to the token.module for more in depth or more specific upload paths. It is compatible with, at least, the image module.

Hey guys I am new to this thread and I hope I am not boring with my answer

Following are some tips we use drupal and related modules to work like jmeehan has posted:

* Multiple uploads at once (drag and drop would be nice).

We have created a document type "documents". This is the only option for users to add attachments to the system. If you want to add for example 5 pictures you will add them as single attachments to a "Document". The Uploadpath module will then take care about moving attachments to a folder with the node name, like: "docs/2008/06/09/My-Holiday-Pictures". All files are set to private, so that all attachments will move inside its own directory and are fully handled by drupal.

There is a plus, you also can add a smart description or abstract to the body of this node, which can be used for searching purposes.

In addition we have enabled Module Uploadprogress, so that a nice Ajax like progressbar we show current upload state.

* Directory browsing of these files or something similar.

What I guess, is that directory browsing is necessary in two ways: 1.) You want to include files in other nodes and you need the path reference (use) and 2. you want to see what files are stored in system (explore). We do it in this way:

1.) Using FCEditor / Filebrowsing for selecting files from your data space. We do NOT allow some uploads within this, its only to select files.

2.) File / Content Browsing is done by a special vocabulary which is called "FileSystem". We use Module "hierarchical_select" to have a nice selector for chosing file-system like tags. We save only deepest levels today. While doing it this way, you can now use tag browsing, to go through your documents

* Simple links for search engine crawling.

I am not sure what this mean, but maybe this is a gift: In the moment you can add content or abstract of your attachments to your "Dcoument" body text, you have also the option to use it as an full text index or something similar to this.

* Incorporate Drupal security to prevent unauthorized access.

Yes, this what we were looking for also and I using it like we do, you can give access to the standard ACL modules which are available for drupal. If you need more deeper/finer access rights, you can add more than on document type.

* Ability to organize files by directory.

In the given way, files in filesystem are automatically organized by Uploadpath and individuall handled by taxonomy.

Hope this would be interesting for someone else.

Have You Tried This Yet?

Hey, I see this is an older post but hopefully this will benefit some other users too. There's an awesome document management software called DocumentLocator by ColumbiaSoft. Just want to make sure you're aware of all your options. They even just came out with a mobile version of their software so you can access your files from your phone or tablet http://www.documentlocator.com/features/mobile-access.htm. Hope this helps!
