Thanks everyone for contributing expert advice to send me in the right direction as I start working with Drupal. Your help has made a huge difference in decisions I'm making about modules and other elements. Thank you!
In case you are curious, I repeated my FTP transfer again of the upgrade from Drupal 6.16 to 6.17 using several settings (including ASCII, which ended up corrupting the files) and went back to an "auto" type setting on the FileZilla transfer. For whatever reason, the line and color formatting returned in Dreamweaver with this repeat FTP transfer on "auto." I have no idea why the formatting disappeared after a previous transfer session which seemed essentially identical, so I wonder if the loss of formatting was a Dreamweaver setting issue rather than an FTP one.
