If you wanna have a working

If you wanna have a working installation of Aegir as an image you can get one at AMAZON EC2.
It's hosted and your need to pay for EC2 but your can have it running in minutes.
Just search for 'Aegir' in the community AMIs.

Can't find the AMI

I searched here but didn't find the AMI: http://aws.amazon.com/amis/

Am I looking in the right place?

Thanks!

I can't find it in the list

I can't find it in the list either.
However, if you create an account with AWS (free for the first year for a micro instance, Aegir needs at least a small instance, which is not free) and choose to launch a new instance you get a proper search mask, result see screenshot.

The project is from Pantheon Drupal, which is based on Aegir but seem to be able to do much more.

Pantheon isn't based on Aegir

Aegir and Pantheon as 2 different projects coming at similar problems from different angles. Both projects use drush, but that is about where the similarities end.

It's all very confusing if

It's all very confusing if you ask me..
- I know that Aegir is a Drupal based deployment platform for managing other Drupal sites;
- I know that Pressflow is an optimised version of Drupal, integrated with Varnish;
- I thought Mercury was a pre-configured stack using Pressflow, Varnish, memcache and APC;
- and I initially thought that Pantheon was a slightly different Mercury stack.. but the website makes it appear similar to Aegir.

I thought that Pantheon is Mercury because searching the Amazon AMI's (from the aws console).. I can see 4 AMI's: 32 and 64 bit >> Mercury 1.0 and 1.1 ... which incidentally contains the name Pantheon.. which leads me to believe they are the same thing? or included? That is what confuses me.

We will be enabling the Mercury 1 or 1.1 AMI's, but will probably (hopefully) end up using a server distro rather than ubuntu (or possibly amazons own or the centos instructions on pressflow.org), otherwise we'll be using the Mercury instructions on drupal.org to create a varnish, apc, memcache, nginx configuration then image for reuse.

I came to this post to download and evaluate an Aegir VM.. the link is unfortunately down for me too....a real shame

Mercury vs Patheon

skwashd's picture

Mercury is the community project which Pantheon is built on top of. Aegir is more about running lots of sites and managing the development workflow. Mercury/Pantheon is more about running one large site and managing the workflow for it.

I run all of my productions servers on Debian stable or ubuntu LTS releases with out any problems. The last RPM based distros I used in production was RH7.0. Both Aegir and Mercury are heavily tested on ubuntu and Debian.
