DrupalCon Copenhagen

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi :-)

I wonder if some of You (Awfully Underrepresented) are going to go to Copenhagen...?

Considering global underrepresentation, I'm Under++, as a woman from (eastern) Europe, especially Poland (misogynous catholic country, where you can be a Queen of Hearth and Home, but not an engineer). Well... I hope that this conference could change my deep and permanent feeling of alienation... that's why I'm going...

Last year I have a lecture @ Gender Studies department University of Warsaw, but it's finished now - no money, even to maintain a web page... I'm a little bit desperate... and want to go... somewhere... to feel useful and needed...

My Con's profile: http://cph2010.drupal.org/user/22328

I will be glad to meet some of you here, have a nice time...

Cheers
Weronika

Hi Weronika! There will

Hi Weronika!

There will definitely be a few of us there. ;) I only know a handful of gals who are coming over from North America, but I'm sure there'll be a bunch of European Drupalchix to meet too.

We'll have to pull together a little BOF session or something! I'm super busy helping out on a local conference, docs, and moving house, so I don't have a ton of time to dedicate to planning, but if you or anyone else who's watching wants to try and sort out a gathering ahead of time, by all means go for it!

Otherwise, we'll set up a BOF last minute and post here and on Twitter (@drupalchix).

See ya there!

Hi Weronika and Ariane,

I'll also be there and sure we'll have a nice time at the Conference.

See ya soon,

Might be there

I will not be attending the full conference but I will be traveling in the area with my family, I would try to come to a get-together if I can.

:—))

verikami's picture

It will be nice to have a session or other kind of (visible) representation at the Conference. Diversity is Important !!! Women are Important !!! Any kind of inclusive and supporting activity... a place for discussion, recognition, articulation of problems...

I'm personally involved in similar set of problems, working and studying at Gender Studies department in Institute of Applied Social Sciences at the Warsaw University, so I have some experiences and knowledge in this matter and I'll be glad to have an opportunity to share, discuss and (of course) to apply :-))

BTW: can we have Drupalchix page @ Facebook...? with kind of mirror (and viceversa) with twitter...? it's technicaly possible and we can connect more RSS feeds (eg. this group) also — just to have more possibilities to find each other, work together, and To Be More Represented ;—))

Weronika

Hey Weronika - You're more

arianek's picture

Hey Weronika -

You're more than welcome to start and manage a FB group if you like! I do most of the posting from the @drupalchix Twitter account, and monitor all tweets that have "drupalchix" in them, so I can retweet messages back to the group and such.

I prefer not to aggregate things into Twitter, as too many tweets tends to make people unfollow, but if you want to aggregate twitter, g.d.o/drupalchix, blogs, etc. into FB I think that'd be a good venue for that sort of thing.

There is also http://drupalchix.org which webchick owns, which is just aggregating twitter accounts at the moment, but we could always ask if she'd mind other people working on extending the site to do other things if you have ideas.

We've had Drupalchix BOF's at the last several cons to discuss gender/Drupal stuff, so if someone wants to set on organizing that ahead of time, go for it! Otherwise, we'll find a time slot last minute and post here and on Twitter.

ok :-) "some" initial work is done

verikami's picture

I prepared two options as draft:

Facebook Group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=110272609028037
Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Drupalchix/130328450345845

...placing a description of this group (which probably should be modified, but I'm not too good "writer" in English) and linking (via RSS Graffiti) feeds from here and drupalchix twitter account, just like Lullabot's:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lullabot/22921791472

Although the idea of Facebook Group may be closer to ours, on the other hand, Page has several important advantages, including: RSS feed and the option to add applications. I find it difficult to decide myself, given that on Facebook everything is still changing and it is impossible to predict the future.

Assuming that what we do is part of some greater whole (which is what I believe we should strive), activities and "energy distribution" should be as well thought out and discussed, which is always conducive to the integration and participation of more people.

Some argument for a Page could be the connection to the drupalchix.org, but this in particular requires the consent and support of Angie, which (apart from considerations of the Community) is important also because of that: Drupalchix is a trademark of Angie Byron ;-)) and it will not be good to go on (and I do not want) without an agreement on this matter.

I will be happy if we can carry out any voting here and choose the right option.

Bonus Pack ;-)) Working with data visualization tool: Managing News (http://managingnews.com) I prepared (using twitter's data from drupalchix.org) the visualization of geographic entries. The so-called "Drupalchix Geoloction" is inspired by: http://planetdrupal.org/ and the KarenS's idea: "Where in the World Are The DrupalChix" - which is very important idea and work.

Project is living here: http://drupalchix.i3.edu.pl/ and I would be happy if it could be useful and commonly developed in the future :-))

PS.: Additionally - for Facebook users (not frightened predominantly Polish language) - I invite you to visit Gender Studies page, which I maintain: http://www.facebook.com/gender.studies

I mention it because a kind of "gender politics" is important aspect of the case, which, I hope I can bring to the Drupalchix community - in both: theory and practice :-)

the visualization of geographic entries with managing news

Mar's picture

Hi Weronika,

first of all thank you very much for doing all this work, it's really awesome. What I like most is the project with managing news.
Visualization of data is always great.

You are right with need an agreement here if we want to make the connection to drupalchix.org

It could be great if we could talk a bit about all this ideas in Copenhagen.

Now I', going to get some rest :)

Thanks again!

Mar

Page instead of group

bsobolewska's picture

Checked both options, and really like the possibilities of page. So +1 for facebook page.
Shame on me, but I never heard of Managing News. Really cool tool, need to find some time to explore it more...

Btw, I'm not sure if you also use LinkedIn, but there are several female and IT (not mentioning Drupal) related groups offering really interesting discussions.

See you soon,

verikami's picture

Thanks for All Your Thanks — I am Very Happy that my work may be useful :-))

I also personally: +1 for "Facebook Page", but it will be good to have more votes. Live discussion @ Drupal Con would be great, maybe a piece of joint work (...of course if we find Any Time... ;-) but "what/where/how" could probably be decided only on the conference.

Referring to the piece of work with Managing News: I think that is very meaningful to develop an "independent place", on which we could collect and connect to various sites and social networks. Leaving the mass of other issues, it should be of course Drupal :-)

MN is very pleasant and promising tool for the future - Developmentseed (the autors) are doing a really decent piece of work. The project itself is a "drupal installation profile", so it can be easily extended with additional functions you need, it is can be managed socially and act in combination (or integration) with other drupal site like a drupalchix.org.

From what I know plans for the next version are to allow mapping every single feed source (currently it only maps "geographic" words in the text). The effect can be quite accurate visualization drupalchix deployment in the world - what would be a great expansion of KarenS's "Where in the World are the DrupalChix?".

Ending at this point — I'm flying tomorrow to Copenhagen — I have to HURRYYYYY !!!

I'll be in Copenhagen as

aschiwi's picture

I'll be in Copenhagen as well. A BOF would be great. But when to make time for it in that crowded schedule of good sessions? There doesn't even seem to be a time for lunch :)

So yes, all arranged, coming

bsobolewska's picture

So yes, all arranged, coming on Sunday, leaving on Friday.
Will be glad to meet you all.
If there will not be time for lunch, we can always go for dinner or drink after sessions.
So see you in a while!

In some dimensions Poland does not look so bad ;-) Women's Rights to Vote we have gained here in 1918 (1920 in US, 1928 in United Kingdom) and in September 2011 - we will organise III European Congress of Women: "Women receive an invitation from all over Europe, as well - which is the suggestion by Hillary Clinton - will invite women from the former Soviet republics" - what will be the great event I hope :-))

I''ll be there!

Would love to meet up!

Meeting on 23.08.

Mar's picture

Hi @tinefin,

I thought if you live in Copenhagen you are the expert :) Perheaps you have an idea where we could meet on the 23.08. and have some drinks and talk?

Greetings

Hi Oh! Thanks for the

tinefin's picture

Hi

Oh! Thanks for the confidence :)

  • The 23rd is tomorrow! How many are we talking? +100?

I don't think I will be able to attend myself, I'm afraid. The weather is rather wet these days, so it would have to be somewhere indoors. Maybe it would be possible to borrow the brewww location? @mortendk is the guy to talk to about that.

If you guys would be in for a gathering later this week, I could try to fix a location for us?

Greetings

I would love to meet you drupalchix in Copenhagen for after session drink or dinner... maybe the first or second day of the conference?
@veriKami: thanks for the facebook pages and all you efforts in this matter!

Sorry, I am totally swamped

webchick's picture

Sorry, I am totally swamped and don't have time to read/respond to this great discussion right now. Hopefully we can talk about these ideas in person. :)

BUT!

In order for that to happen, we really need to organize a Drupalchix BoF! I unfortunately am completely slammed and don't have the time/ability to take this on, but would gladly come if someone else can take the lead (well, as long as I'm not presenting at the time ;)).

BoF schedule thingy is here: http://cph2010.drupal.org/sessions/schedule/bofs
Session timetable is here: http://cph2010.drupal.org/sessions/timetable

In general, we try and schedule this BoF on the first day, so that we all have some friendly faces we know throughout the rest of the con. We've tried it at lunch, and that's way too hectic. :\ It's really nice to pick a slot where there isn't a woman presenter, but that's been getting harder and harder the longer Drupalchix has been around. ;) Maybe a post-con drinks/dinner thing would be cool, but at Drupalcon SF we had over 100 attendees, which would of course make this extremely challenging to find a place large enough to accommodate. ;) I think at Drupalcon SF, folks met informally the day before the con and had a picnic thing, so that might be an idea.

Anyway! Anyone here able to dedicate some brain-space to this? Pretty pretty please? :)

Picnic on the 23th?

Mar's picture

Hi all of you,

the idea of a sort of picnic or informal meeting for drinks/eating on the 23th sounds great. My vote for it ;) I don't either have much time left to organize a BoF just now, sorry.

Mar

I didn't want to be the main

arianek's picture

I didn't want to be the main organizer extraordinaire in case i don't feel well and then don't make it! (I haven't travelled internationally before, and am not sure how my cranky system is going to hold up.) ;)

Are most people staying near downtown? Maybe we could indeed try something in evening if so... do we want to do mostly a "social" or also have some discussions about gender/Drupal sorts of things?

I'm near to the Kongens Nytorv (park/roundabout thing) near to the intersection of Store Kongensgade and Goethersgade. There are piles of restaurants in the area, but I wouldn't know which are good - there's also a big park, Rosenborg Have that might be ok for picnics if it's not too chilly (it was pretty cold yesterday evening).

If I spot any restaurants that look accommodating I'll post again.

Oh! Great !!! The discussion

verikami's picture

Oh! Great !!! The discussion arises, and I have a great desire to meet with you all!

I think that - as suggested by Angie - would be good to meet as early as possible, preferably on the first day on "something informal"... more like a picnic than lunch, so that was the opportunity to talk - what with "food only" events is not necessarily well going ;-)

I can not undertake the organization of the BoF, because I'll be the first time at the conference, I do not know the formula and anyone personally - although it sounds very intriguing and appealing ;-) however, it would be too crazy... In addition, a long time since I had occasion to speak English and I need a little work out, in order to be communicative and funny ;-)) But "Brain Space", in the "Form of Pure" I'm sincere offering !!!

I do believe that "Formal Drupalchix Events" should be organized, because it is very necessary to have any kind of apparent broad representation - as a starting point - for the integration, support and development. I think this is worth the work, and maybe, next time... For the moment - because I'm already in Copenhagen :-)) some pictures to see how this town looks like:

Tuesday 10am Drupalchix BOF

arianek's picture

http://cph2010.drupal.org/sessions/drupalchix

I just booked a BOF room for the 10am Tuesday timeslot - it was the only slot earlier in the week where there weren't any women presenting and it seemed like sessions that wouldn't be a disaster to miss out on. I ran it by some of the other women at the Core Dev Summit today, and we agreed it was probably the best time, so I hope most people can make it!

See you there!
