Can this idea for a non-profit, world-spanning project to connect volunteers be done with Drupal?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

The project is the creation of a website dedicated to building a worldwide network of people who really want to do something to make a difference in the world helping in whatever way they can. This members in the network would be volunteer. And with the age of the internet truly upon us, with Twitter, iPhones, cheap mobile phone internet access etc etc blossoming all around us, there is no better time. People in the network would log onto the site to find others to work with or who would work with them, pooling their particular skills together to achieve a certain project that has caught their attention or that they have posted on the ‘projects’ bulletin board. It might be build a school for kids in a poor village in Thailand. Organize a marathon fundraiser to fund a clinic in Africa. Organize a group to protect and clean a natural area that is being polluted without any official law protecting it. Salvage and build computers for an orphanage. Volunteer to drive terminally ill people to see their families/friends to say goodbye. Arrange for people with free time and knowledge to tutor less fortunate people (the poor, the disabled, the elderly) in skills they could build a better life with, like a trade, a language, skill. Organize a petition to pressure the government to save spots of world heritage or of inspiration to mankind that are in threat of being lost forever. Organizing a recycling system that can raise money for foreign aid, making collection boxes and distributing them around your area (after the passnet cards stopped being produced here, I had nothing to collect to donate for vaccination fund raising, but recently I found that bottle caps are now being collected for the same purpose. Can you imagine how many of them are just tossed every day in the world?) Projects like salvaging the wasted resources thoughtlessly thrown way in our too-well-off (?) First World countries and using them to help up our brothers and sisters from situations that they simply can’t find the strength to lift themselves from. The possibilities are endless and only limited to the imagination, observational skills and courage of the individuals and groups involved in each project.

There are certainly people out there who don’t want to go through their life without having done anything for their fellow man. They feel frustrated due to not having a way of reaching out to those in need and easing their burden when they have so much philanthropic energy brimming within them. There would be thousands of people around the world like that and I want to connect them.

This would be about helping others do good for others. This would be about extending our hands to our fellow man and fighting to lift them up to a place of where they can believe in a better future. To give them the hope that every person on this planet deserves. To give them the leeway to be able to love their families and friends rather than struggle to merely survive the day. Because everyone deserves these things in life.

Now the system itself would incorporate some or all of the following and maybe more. The bits and pieces I would like the site to have if possible, somehow cobbled together are :
- a forum
- a PM system
- a video chat system like MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger or Skype
- a photo storage like Picasso
- a video account like You Tube
- a member profile like a blog (and blogs might be dynamic and flexible enough to link all the above into, but we the interface to be simple and WYSIWIG as possible)

And anything else that may be useful to communicating with each other.

It would be great if a basic multi-media linked up account could be produced for each member signing up like from a generic template expressly designed for our members MOJ needs. But, this may be technically impossible (on a shoestring budget) and accounts may need to be pieced together (videos manually imbedded and linked to blogs etc) by the member themselves.

I have a few leads on free and cheap examples of the above, but I need more tech savvy people to consult with and others who can work magic with building the prototype site.

Please let me know if you have any ideas, suggestions or feedback. And if you have any skills that might be applicable to this project or know anyone who might have interest in this project and be able to help in brining it to life.

I'm pretty sure everything

I'm pretty sure everything that you have listed could be done drupal. Especially if you wait until drupal 7 for the media module.
Personally I feel it makes more sense to keep videos hosted on youtube and totally imbed them.

However a couple of points:

1) Write up use cases of the steps users are going to take through your site. What do you want people to actually DO (as opposed to features that just help people do things)
2) Realise what you're suggesting will be hard work, if you want it cheaply you'll probably have to do alot of initial work yourself because I know a few charities that have tried building cool websites to do things like you've suggested and it has always ended up being harder then they first thought.
3) Start small and aim to expand. If you think there are thousands of people, the chances are you live near them. So build a site aimed at a very small segment (like people around you, or people involved in X charity) and expand from there
