After some very generous help from a fellow triDUGer, I found that the site I want to build is much less complicated than I had envisioned. Thank you Allen! The one question I forgot to ask was D6 or D7?
I see the issue queue for D7 marching down and Aquia is using it for Drupal Gardens. Many of the major modules have been incorporated in D7 Core or are promised on day1 (unlike D6).
Which will be least painful?
Last minute patches for D7? or
Building a site in D6 and then going thru the D6->7 upgrades?
I know some of you have faced this before, and I would appreciate your opinion.
Thanks

Depends on what kind of site
Depends on what kind of site you are building. If the contrib modules you need have been ported to D7, and usability concerns are important to you, then I would suggest trying D7. The usability improvements are significant.
It is a fairly
It is a fairly straightforward site. At least for Phase 1. Five content types, cck fields, filtered views, forums (more of a Q&A).
Phase 2 will be more complex. By that time there may be more appropriate contrib modules or I will have changed thinking on these features. These items are beyond me and may require professional caliber care.
Usability, as well as accessibility, are very important as engineering students as well as seasoned professionals are targeted.
Most of the modules I need soon are in development or are promised. I hope that most of the code snippets and tutorials I have collected will still be relevant.
