User group meeting

We'll be getting together for the 2nd Tampa Bay Meetup in Feather Sound on October 21st. (We plan to meetup on the first Thursday of each month, but due to availability at the chosen location October will be the 3rd Thursday.)

Since our group so far has a pretty mixed level of experience with Drupal, Mike Wright has volunteered to go over setting up a basic Drupal site and how to use cron with regards to Drupal. He mentioned that he would be utilizing one of the Acquia one-click stack installers.

There is wifi available, and Mike will be bringing a projector for the meeting.

We'll be meeting at the Panera on Ulmerton Road, where they have an actual meeting room for us. The address is:

2285 Ulmerton Rd.
Clearwater, FL 3376
Google Maps Link

There is a $50 charge to use their meeting room, but any food purchases are deducted from this cost, so come hungry (for food as well as Drupal knowledge)!

Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Just chiming in on this post to remind people about it, since it's been close to 2 months since our last meetup (due to timing shift for October). Looking forward to it.

To clarify...

The event formally stated "the Panera on 4th St.", but the address said Ulmerton Rd. The meeting is at the Panera on Ulmerton. Sorry for any confusion!

Meeting Recap

chrisbudy's picture

Had a great meeting, with a couple new faces.

Attendance: Mike, Joe, Chris, Shawn, Pam, Adam, Cynde, Willow, Danielle? (sorry didn't catch your name)

Mike gave a presentation showing off the Acquia install stacks. He touched on them all, but demoed the Windows Stack.

Notes from the presentation:

  • Download Acquia from www.acquia.com/downloads
  • During setup:
    • He recommended that you use something different than "admin" for your initial account, for security reasons (something like clientnameAdmin, or projectnameAdmin, etc.)
    • Follow the prompts, most defaults are fine
    • Noted that it defaults to a non-standard port number for the web server, 8082. Standard web port is port 80.
  • Discussed where Acquia places it's default themes and modules, which are in the root folders of the same name
    • It was mentioned that if you are going to use the Acquia subscription service, it's likely fine to leave everything where it is as that's where Acquia will expect them to be
    • If on the otherhand you're going to be using it as a standard Drupal install, he recommended that you move the acquia directories into more standard locations and rename as needed (modules/acquia becomes /sites/all/modules and /themes/acquia becomes /sites/all/themes)
  • Discussed the basics of multi-site setup, and mentioned that it's possible to have separate sites on the same code base (multi-site) that share the same users table (shared/single sign-on)

We also had some general discussion and questions, as well as some specific questions. A quick recap of those:

  • Interesting modules to check out
  • Discussed some basics of Facebook integration options (there's a module for that..., and for many items you can simply use FB embedded javascript code in your templates, etc.)

That's all I've got from notes and memory. Feel free to add anything else to the thread, and look forward to the next meeting!
