I am experimenting with building a small social network for a community. I am using the standard contrib modules used for social networks such user relationships, flags, content profile, facebook style statuses, image cache, image cache profiles, blogs, images, emfield(videos), views, cck, context, invite, messaging, notifications, organic groups, panels, rules, voting. I am confused as how to create a news feed(facebook), a activity stream for each user. There are a few modules such as heartbeat, activity stream but I haven't used any of them before. Can anyone suggest me as to which module would better integrate with the user relationships and flag. This is my first attempt at building a social network and gained a lot of knowledge reading through the posts in this group.

It's a complete install profile that does most of these things for you out-of-the-box.
Activity module
For activity you can use Activity Module, it works well with UR and Flag.

I have been experimenting
I have been experimenting with heartbeat module and like it. I will also give a shot at activity module and will come back with my experience. I have checked out commons, its really awesome I am using the commons theme and lots of other settings from it(featured content, quant module). It would be great if commons had albums,videos and status updates built with user profile since its really not that complex to implement. Drupal commons is GPLv2 right?
