how much filtering should we do, how much can Knight handle?

• they don't want many small proposals ($500), they would prefer fewer larger proposals
• 5 to 10 proposals per quarter not a strong limitation though

Goals

• Easier, simpler, create a tool that will be easier to use to facilitate public discussion. Anyone can start their own news site without being a computer geek
• Usability
• comprehensive, completeness, installation in one step
• internationalization

Rules from Knight Foundation

• hosted is allowed
• news "new information", community focus
• not necessarily a specific geographic community, but should be able to be targeted to a community.

include before and after workflows in proposals, technical details should be spared in some cases in favor of a more easily understood explanation

include an interrelation between all of the proposals passed on to knight foundation if possible

knight foundation turnaround time - first contact within 2 weeks, beyond that

outline the whole workflow

• don't waste time with people who won't follow through
• individuals, companies, non-profit, international applicants
• working for a company, must inform the company and will allow it
