Can you spare 20 minutes to take a survey about a Drupal development project undertaken by researchers at New Jersey Institute of Technology and Massey University in New Zealand? This NSF funded project -- OKES: An Open Knowledge Exchange System to Promote Meta-Disciplinary Collaboration Based on Socio-Technical Principles (NSF SOCS/IT Research Award Number 0968445) -- seeks input from Drupal developers as to how Drupal can be used to support traditional conference and unconference collaboration.

Open Source is about collaboration and modular enhancement of the core product. Do CMS end users debug and improve existing modules or do they write their own modules? This survey is being conducted to determine how much code Drupal implementers actually write. The advent of modules such as CCK, Views, Organic Groups, Workflow, Ubercart, E-Commerce, Panels and Actions along with a dozen or so other modules has a empowered web developers with the ability to create sites writing little or no custom code. Recently NTEN (Nonprofit Technology Network) put out their 2008 CMS Satisfaction Survey. You can find the full text and numbers for this survey on their web page, though it will cost you $50 if you are not a member. They are a valuable nonprofit themselves, so supporting them seems to be a good thing, and this report would go a long way to helping many of you convince your clients to use Drupal, more than you could achieve in $50 of billable time in many cases, so it would be $50 well spent.

In any event I thought I'd at least share the basics of that report, on how Drupal ranked in customer satisfaction and related areas. Remember though that this is not representative of all your clients, but is nonprofit focussed, which is a group probably more likely to use free tools before most others, so it is unlikely that the world at large matches these numbers, fascinating as they are.

Hi all!
As a part of my course on Usability Design at the University of Leuven (Belgium), I'm doing a user and task analysis on Drupal.
I have started a user survey to collect useful data on the users of Drupal. With this data, I will create user profiles and personas to reflect some typical user groups of Drupal.
