flexslider

I'm trying to 1) use flexslider with thumbnails for control navigation, and 2) add an overlay with title and description (see overlay.png). I'm hoping that somebody can help me out.

1. The first half of the question would probably be tagged as a duplicate question on d.o, but I haven't seen a step by step solution. How can I set up a flexslider slideshow with the carousel thumbnails shown at http://flex.madebymufffin.com/examples/thumbnail-controlnav.html.
