I'm trying to 1) use flexslider with thumbnails for control navigation, and 2) add an overlay with title and description (see overlay.png). I'm hoping that somebody can help me out.

The first half of the question would probably be tagged as a duplicate question on d.o, but I haven't seen a step by step solution. How can I set up a flexslider slideshow with the carousel thumbnails shown at http://flex.madebymufffin.com/examples/thumbnail-controlnav.html.

I'm guessing that the overlay I want to create is a CSS issue. I've started through a tutorial by LevelUpTut, but it's enough different from what I want to do that I'm having a tough time extrapolating what I need. I'm a novice when it comes to CSS, so any detail you can provide would be helpful.
Thanks for any direction you can provide.

Presuming you're using Drupal
Presuming you're using Drupal 7, the latest -dev version is supposed to let you do this.
Were you able to get thumbnails to work?
1) I'm still trying to get the thumbnails to work, but unable to get the images to show. theres an option in Flexslider 2 to use thumbnails, but havent found any step by step instructions to get it to show images.
2) for the overlay, found this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn0QIRd6-sw
I figured it out, but not with FlexSlider
Instead I used View Slideshow: Cycle. And for the overlay I relied heavily on the video that you metioned. The slideshow I was working on is at leelibraryfoundation.org.
I'm remiss in not having provided an answer to my question at the time. I'm now in the process of trying to recreate what I did so that I can document it. Stay tuned.

I took me a while to figure out what I had done, but I've got the steps down and posted at http://rachel-prescott.com/blog/create-slideshow-overlay. I did learn a valuable lesson in that when I struggle to figure something out I had best document it immediately so that I can recreate it.
