After attempting to get apc and xhprof running on my mac (and trying to decipher homebrew errors), I decided to download acquia dev desktop 7.. if you want apc and xhprof running without paying for mamp pro (or you want to keep your existing apache/php/mysql installation working and have another dev environment), this option seems to have everything you need.
