Hey guys.

I've spoken to a really nice guy in Joomla IRC channel and he offered to give a talk on various joomla topics. As i can see it, this is a great oportunity for many of us to find out about alternatives or find out which tool fits better for what job.

To be honest i know nothing useful about joomla and i would love to find out more, especialy when it comes from 1.5.x maintainance leader A.K.A. "Leader of the Bug Squad". i dont know if we could find a better person to give us this talk even if we paid some one so grab this oportunity.

now i need to know if people are interested at all in somethign like this. please place your vote.

Important note:

This is not a drupal vs joomla bash party. i want this to be purely about joomla and how it works. then you guys can get together over drinks and discuss how what we learn from this talk differs from drupal. but by no means should this discussion happen DURING the talk. lets keep this clean. thank you.

Good Idea

chrisnyc's picture

I haven't heard charitable things about Joomla from people I know, but even if all that is true, it seems like a good idea to be able to be conversant on WHY it's a good or bad system, and how Drupal compares. I haven't been to one of the meetups yet, but this sound like a good entry point.

I've just spent a few days at NetSquared in San Jose with a bunch of other non-profit-tech people, and although Drupal was the platform of choice for those who weren't building their own thing from scratch, lots of questions were asked about Joomla, which I had no way to answer. I'd love to learn what its strengths are and who's using it.

I am currently working on one Joomla project, and would love to learn more. I don't like it nearly as well as Drupal, but understanding more might help!

Respectfully Disagree

techsoldaten's picture

Not that I have anything against sharing information, but there are plenty of Joomla resources out there already. I was a mambo developer way back when and enjoy Drupal meetups because I don't have to hear about Joomla.

For anyone who's interested - NYC Joomla User's Group - http://www.joomlanyc.org/ - is a pretty active group. They meet bi-monthly but get great turnouts.

Perhaps it would make sense for someone to attend one of those meetings and just report back? Better yet, maybe it would make more sense to talk to those guys about a joint meetup?

Another idea, instead of us trying to find out more on our own, would be to invite an expert for a short presentation. Ryan Ozimek from Picnet is a high level Joomla guru, I've been on some panels with him in the past, and might drop by if he's in town. Any interest in having me reach out to him?

my post doesnt say anything

I think a useful talk could come from someone who was knowledgeable about Joomla AND Drupal and could describe from experience issues and advantages of each. Just about anything that's Turing complete will have its advocates and experts and people looking to test the waters of the Joomla community can be best served by going to a Joomla NYC meetup as techsoldaten mentioned.

I don't really care what the

I don't really care what the group decides. I'm just happy to see others posting pertinent questions, etc. to the site. Please keep it up.

The perfect CMS

accessiveapps's picture

Unless the perfect open source CMS is not invented yet and many people at the drupal meet ups and camps still not sure if drupal is the best solution for them I think it is quite ok to here both sides. Too much people starting their sites on a CM System which hypes more then others without any technical background to say after all Joomla or Drupal sucks.

Be open minded both partys are sitting in the same boat.
