Drupal 7 Install?
While I'm all for setting up a D7 install at the 2/28 meetup if folks are into that, I don't think we should install anything at drupalpgh.org until we have a clear understanding of what we're building. We need scoping decisions and responsibilities to be established before putting something up in that space.
Maybe we can set up dev.drupalpgh.org or something and build there. That way everyone can see what's going on, but we're not building on a live site at a production address.
It makes more sense to me to try to hammer out who will be responsible for design and dev at the 2/28 meeting, and to finalize the feature list, esp. since Lin has some cool info to share with us (and it's likely that an install, however simple, will take longer than we think it will).
Thoughts?
Another thing to consider
Another thing to consider would be working on Drupal Gardens for now and then migrating it to it's own server once work has progressed a little bit.
Please forgive me but...
Please forgive me but I already set up a very basic D7 site yesterday on Bruce's server. See it at http://drupalpgh.org/ . Any of the Pgh group can create an account (I will approve) and start posting. Also, I am totally up for any design suggestions. I just started out with Zero Point theme as it has several configurable options in the theme backend.
For such a sophisticated CMS, D7 is amazingly fast and easy to use. I would really like to open up the RDF capabilities on this site.
Well that sounds like
Well that sounds like something I might be able to help with ;)
I would be happy to
I would be happy to contribute to the design of the site.

Design ideas
My post from http://groups.drupal.org/node/125289:
Design ideas
OK, start with a Theme. I setup Zero Point to get started, but this is by no means final. Does anyone have a favorite theme you would like to see? I believe that adding a theme requires FTP, which we have. Tell me and I will set up any theme you suggest.
How about a logo that reflects well on our group as well as the area? Something that would convey a sense of "Pittsburgh: The next big DrupalCon". Any graphics artists out there?
Modules
D7 has a really cool feature that lets you install new modules by providing the url of the tar.gz file. Please consider what modules we want/need. I was thinking Organic Groups. Anything else?
Permissions
I really hope this site will be a group effort, rather than a project of a few. Toward this end, I would be happy to grant admin privileges to anyone wanting to work on the site. So, who should be admins, and who will be authenticated users? What permissions do we grant to whom? Do we want any other roles? Bloggers?

three rivers bike rack drupal
Any other bikers out there? I love the Three Rivers Bike Rack design, and it seems it would fit the drupal drop just fine. Not sure if the bike rack design is copyrighted, but one thing we are is three rivers folk, and perhaps a little concerned about the environment?
I'm not an artist, either, so I won't even make an attempt at compositing the two...
3 druplets?
I like the idea of a logo with the three rivers. We don't have to copy the bike rack. We could use a satellite image as the starting point to composite with the Drupal drops.
Process!
I think we need to approach this with a plan, rather than just figuring it out as we go along. I also REALLY think we should develop in a dev environment, and not at our production address. It seems to me like we're getting ahead of ourselves talking about modules and permissions when we haven't even really decided what we want this site to be for.
First Steps
Let's figure out what the aim of this site is. This will inform everything else we decide to do with it - design, architecture, what modules we need, etc.
As I see it, this site should be primarily a marketing vehicle to tell people about the Pittsburgh Drupal community, who we are, where and when we meet, and what are goals are. To this end, desired features would include a calendar of upcoming and past user group meetings or affiliated events, content (transcripts/video) from previous meetings, and perhaps some curated articles. A job board would also be nice, but should not preclude listings on groups.drupal.org. We should push new articles and event notifications via facebook and twitter as well.
I'm -1 for user blogs. However, I'm all for carefully-written, article based type blog with some type of editorial moderation. I think sharing case studies on projects we've built or how-to's on some core functionality / use-cases would be great. We should make sure that the content we're sharing as representative of the group is vetted for accuracy and professionalism. If users want individual blogs, we should link to them from member profiles, and maybe aggregate content from thier feeds.
We just barely started talking about this last meeting. I think we need to reach some consensus on how this project is to proceed and who is responsible for what parts of it. A project coordinator or committee would be a great start - someone to keep things focused and on track.
OG and groups.drupal.org
We already have a great resource for information sharing, Q&A and less-formal blog-type entries at groups.drupal.org. We should invite folks to ask questions and participate there (here?) rather than trying to replicate this functionality. G.d.o is where people in the drupal community go to find out about drupallers in a new city/region or somewhere they might be visiting. It also allows us to cross-post discussions or events of greater interest in other groups as well. So I'm -1 for OG unless you have some particular use-case I'm not thinking of.
On Module Selection
We should choose features based on the desired outcome. I'm all for setting up a public sandbox where we can all try out new features, but I don't think that this site is where that should occur.
On Theming
A custom theme is definitely required here. We want to visually represent our group and it's mission, and to some degree demonstrate the flexibility of the platform and our expertise in working with it. I don't think a boxed theme accomplishes this as well as a custom theme would.
Meeting time.
I'd like to see us use our time at the meeting to agree on a mission for the group (and this site), decide who is responsible for what parts of the project and how it will proceed (what kind of input does/should the group have at what points in the process?), and finalize an agreed upon featureset based on what we want the site to accomplish.
Once decided, we should post this on the dev plan page (which should likely not be a wiki but something that is updated by the projects leader(s) based on discussion in this thread or decisions from the meetings).
This is potentially a great way to grow our group and appeal to new folks in the area who are interested in Drupal. It's worth doing as well as possible. Let's save some time on the 28th to discuss.
I think marktfrey's approach
I think marktfrey's approach is excellent. I concur in full. So, let's discuss this on the 28th, and meanwhile everyone please consider the Mark's proposals:
1) the site as a marketing vehicle to tell people about the Pittsburgh Drupal community, who we are, where and when we meet, and what are goals are
2) a calendar of upcoming and past user group meetings or affiliated events
3) content (transcripts/video) from previous meetings, and perhaps some curated articles
4) (possibly) a job board (but don't preclude listings on groups.drupal.org)
5) push new articles and event notifications via facebook and twitter
More Process
I agree with marktfrey. That is what we discussed at the February meeting. We also decided to carry on a conversation in this thread about the site so we could utilize the time in the meeting better. That seems to be working. We are arriving at a consensus about the process.
Keep on discussing process and mission of the group at this time. Save specific modules and themes for later.
Our original/current mission statement was/is:
Supporting the development and distribution of Drupal in Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania.
In discussions a couple of years ago, we also discussed making Drupal in education part of our mission. We meant more than an eduction distribution or use in educational institutions. We also wanted to promote the teaching of Drupal in schools/colleges. This mission is implicit in the current mission statement listed above but we might want to make it explicit.
whoamus
I also agree with markfrey's approach. Not sure if we need a custom theme or just a customized theme. There's an awful lot you can do with e.g. Acquia Marina 3.x (and others) plus fusion/skinr, but if there's good reason for a custom theme (like maybe one divided by the three rivers) then I'm not opposed.
A good step is to decide who we are. I can help facilitate a process for that at the next meeting, and to get the ball rolling I'll throw out a few words here and invite others to add some of their own.
Who we are/why we are in the Drupal User Group:
Causes we believe Drupal can play a part in:
DrupalPgh logo
First, my apologies for missing the meeting on April 4th.
Second, I asked a graphics artist with whom I work to create some possible logos - banners really - that would reflect well on our Drupal Pittsburgh group and website. She came up with several different possible jpegs which I wanted to run by the group, so I created a page at http://drupalpgh.org/logos to display all of the different images.
I also ftp'd five of the images up to the site under sites/all/themes/zeropoint/_custom/headerimg/ so these would rotate on each page load.
Check out http://drupalpgh.org/logos and let me know what you think.
DrupalPgh Logo
Personally, I'm not a fan of any of them. If I had to choose I would choose the last one, the tunnel. I don't see what these have to do with Drupal. The 0101 theme is stereotypical/overdone for me. I'm not sure what to think of the bullseye? on the person's face.
Robin
I think the logos are good
If you are going to use a dark background banner, maybe add some background styles like this so the text does not blend too much and get "lost"
site-name a, #site-name a:hover {
}
Thats just my 1 minute take on it in FireBug, it could be done better. The selectors are from style-zero.css line 470 so you need to override them both. A semitransparent PNG would make a better background but I'd want to play with it to get a nice look.
Quick edit.. a semitrans png would make a better backgroung COLOR instead of the solid #333333 I suggested. It sounded like I was backhandedly criticizing the logos themselves when I reread my post.
Logos
Thanks for taking this on.
I agree with both Robin and Gregory.
Have the text stand out more.
The ones with subtle 01010 theme are good.
Add some Drupal reference.
I am not sure why it fades to white on the left side nor what that white bubble is on the left.
Of the pictures there, I like:

http://drupalpgh.org/sites/default/files/bulding.jpg

http://drupalpgh.org/sites/default/files/pitt4.jpg
http://drupalpgh.org/sites/default/files/pittTunnel.jpg
I would use the night shots from the above list, have it fade to gold on the left, and have the black and gold Drupalcon that Mark Frey used on http://groups.drupal.org/pittsburgh-and-southwestern-pa (GDO) instead of the white bubble.

I think we are getting close to a nice logo. Once it is decided on, we could put this at the top of the GDO page, too.

Drupal logo
I think Capt. Obvious just smacked me in the back of the head. Should the group's logo incorporate the drupalicon in some way? I mean the blue, water drop, smiley face image. Or maybe the groups.drupal.org globe-like one?

How about this
If everyone likes this, I'd be willing to work up a theme for the Pgh Drupal site.

the Steelmark? I like it!
A few quick thoughts:
1: Can we change the wording to DrupalPGH? We're officially not just Pittsburgh, but Pittsburgh and southwestern PA, so maybe we should incorporate that. The wording I've been using is DrupalPGH: Pittsburgh and Southwestern Pennsylvania Drupal Users.
2: Can we move the drop to the bottom spot? I think it goes yellow-red-blue. Also, kindof fits the water droplet motif.
3: I wonder if we need some kind of licensing to use the steelmark? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steelmark). Pretty sure between American Iron & Steel and the Steelers, someone could sue us for nonexistent assets or damages. If it's in the clear, I'm in.
4: Not sure about the font. I think something more Industrial / Stencilly might look good if we're going with the steel industry theme, or maybe a mashup with the drupal wordmark.
1) Changing it to match the
1) Changing it to match the official name of the group is no problem.
2) I tried having the droplet at the bottom and it feels like it's falling off the logo and that was slightly disturbing.
3) Very good question. Will seek out an answer.
4) Personally I would like to avoid associating Pittsburgh with steel (dirt, smog, etc). That industry has left and we need to focus on a cleaner and more tech-centric Pittsburgh. That said, I'll explore a few options and post them.
I would say there is no issue
I am not a lawyer but I have run a lot of things like this before lawyers before. The logo has been changed plenty to be considered a Derivative Work, which would be the Steelers/NFL's biggest concern because they make so much from merchandising the logo. The INTENT was a creative repurposing of the steelmark, not to re-use the Steelers logo. We are not, for example, a group of people who use drupal to build steelers fan sites.
If someone considers the steelmark to be a trademark, it is on the them to defend the trademark. The first step in doing this is to indicate the mark's status with either the TM or the circle-R symbol and I have never seen it indicated as such. Further, the words "Steel" and "Steelers" are removed from our version "for clarification". To defend a trademark they would need to demonstrate that our usage of the mark causes confusion in the marketplace between the products we offer and those offered by the trademark holder, which is a leap no reasonable person would make.
Like I said though, I am not a lawyer, even though I may play one on the internet. They'd probably just send a cease and desist letter in any case. In terms of proving damages, like they say you cannot get blood from a stone. Who would they sue as no one has profited?
Good weekend all!
Thanks!
Aweseome. Thanks so much for sharing what you know on the topic -- are you sure you're not an attorney :). The explanation is much appreciated.
Fading and the bubble
Re: I am not sure why it fades to white on the left side nor what that white bubble is on the left.
The fading is how the default header images are in Zero Point theme and a hard edge didn't look right so I made the edges the same. The other option would be to have the image extend all the way to the left margin.
The bubble is optional in Zero Point and can be hidden if desired.

I vote plus 10 on Randy's logo. The binary/fades/dewdrop are confusing and a bit incomprehensible, no offense.

Thanks Ralph, Randy, and Rob
Thanks Ralph, Randy, and Rob for taking the initiative on this. Olivia (who came to our March meetup) is working on some IA / Wireframes based on a few discussions we've had within the group (and within this thread) on the direction of the DrupalPGH site. I'll pass those along as soon as I hear from her.
I'll gladly volunteer my services as a sitebuilder and developer once the design is ready :). Let me know.
