MySQL tuning: identifying and improving slow queries

Ashok Modi (@BTMash) will talk about a site he worked on that had a slow page load. He identified a very slow MySQL query that took 1.5-2 seconds to execute, examined the query, had it explained and figured out how to speed it up to about .05 seconds, making the site much zippier.

   Drupal Gardens tour

Benno Sebastian (@kingofprinting) will give us a tour of Drupal Gardens, the hosted Drupal 7 service from Acquia that is to Drupal as WordPress.com is to WordPress. Benno will share what he has learned after building several sites with Drupal Gardens, including which features are available in Gardens and any gotchas that people should know.

As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.

Presentation ideas?

Techivist's picture

Sooooo anyone got something they'd like to share or have ideas for topics they'd like to see presented?

I've heard a couple folks mention SimpleTest (I committed to giving a super simple newbie intro at May's DTLA meetup). I also keep seeing more & more interest in Drupal 7. Drupal Gardens? Theming tips & tricks? Are you having trouble getting started on something or finishing something else up?

One of our goals is to always try & provide every attendee with something valuable at each meetup. So speak up. Newbie, intermediate & advanced topics are all welcome & encouraged.

Drupal Gardens

Benno Sebastian's picture

Hi Miguel,
I am happy to give a tour for Drupal Gardens. I have created a few simple portfolio sites. Most of them are a work in progress awaiting more content or direction from the client. Drupal Gardens now features webform 3, views 3, rotating banner module, the media module with drag and drop gallery. The media module also works with wysiwyg. A visual click and save theme tool.
I love to share what I have learned so far.
Benno

Was hoping to see this walk-through of yours of Drupal Gardens @DDCLA but you didn't get a chance to so I'm glad to see it here. I, too, have been using DG quite a bit lately & even recently launched a site thru it using a custom domain. DG also went "live" & out of beta on March 2nd & so finalized their pricing plans.

Lots of good stuff to talk about re: DG. Look forward to seeing your presentation, Benno.

The Hollywood Reporter case study

christefano's picture

New on the agenda: John N. Marchesini (@TechCeleb) from The Hollywood Reporter will be giving a case study / demo of THR's new Drupal site that they launched in October, 2010. This is a great opportunity for anyone who has questions about how THR.com was designed, built, project managed and deployed.

Lightning talk on finding (and improving) slow queries

btmash's picture

Looking forward to the case study by @TechCeleb :) As a precursor to the Drupal Performance meetup being organized by Christefano, I wanted to talk about a real-case where we had a very slow query (1.5 - 2 seconds to execute) which was slowing down the page load on a website I was working on (which had a prerequisite that the site must be as fast as possible). This involved examining the query, having it explained, and figuring out how to speed it up (the speed up went to about .05 seconds) making the site much zippier. Though I'm not sure if this makes more sense being presented on the 26th instead.

This lightning talk would be

christefano's picture

This lightning talk would be great to see. I'll include it in the agenda. If you aren't able to make it for some reason, I can fill in and describe what we did last weekend with drupal_add_index().

Where's the +10 button?!!!

Techivist's picture

This would make for a kickass lightning talk. As always, you rock Ashok! Lookin' forward to it.

Mmmm... Making Queries Faster. Yummy!

samsonlov's picture

I would love to hear this talk. Improving performance is always a hot topic, and if you've got a lightning talk about how you got a 3000% to 4000% speed/performance increase, I'd show-up for that alone! Of course, I'll be there anyway to learn whatever I can. :)

Yes, that is my profile pic.
:)

Looking forward to it.

samsonlov's picture

I have really enjoyed the first 3 meetups I attended (the last 3 meetups); Looks like this one will be just as informative. Also, our company is hiring Drupal Developers. :D http://groups.drupal.org/node/134989

Great to hear

Techivist's picture

Great to hear, Samson! We're glad to have ya & are glad you've enjoyed yourself & found value in the meetups. As always, you'll have the floor for a couple minutes to pitch your Drupal job. Cya then!

ps. that profile pic trips me out every time ;)

Lightning Talk: my first module

chellman's picture

I'm thinking of something newbie-friendly on some of the use cases for creating a basic glue module (hook_*_alter), and actually doing it. Something quick, to show that You Too Can Make A Module™. With two LTs and a full presentation, I'm thinking this is unlikely to fit the agenda, but if I'm wrong about that, I'd do it.

Sounds great, Joe

Techivist's picture

Sounds great, Joe! I think this would make for a perfect follow-up to last month's (http://groups.drupal.org/node/112644) Intro to Hooks presentation by @oseldman & @wizonesolutions (Oliver & Kevin). I'd say come prepared to give your lightning talk. If time doesn't permit, you've got first dibs on a slot for May! However, I'm thinking folks will want to hear all 3 lightning talks (I know I sure do!) so maybe we'll try even harder to stay on-schedule.

In other words, YES! :)

Oh & btw, we didn't get to hear your Features presentation last month (would be great to see!), maybe next month, Joe?

I'd love to see this

christefano's picture

I'd love to see this (provided we have enough time). Miguel's right that this is a perfect followup to the Why Hooks? presentation at last month's meetup.

Maybe some day I'll get on

chellman's picture

Maybe some day I'll get on the stick and propose something more than a couple days in advance. :)

Can't make it tonight

chellman's picture

The schedule has that much more flexibility; I can't make it tonight.

I'd like to give this MFM™ talk at the DTLA May meetup, if that's possible.

If there is time, I'd like to

wizonesolutions's picture

If there is time, I'd like to take a couple minutes and tell you guys about a neat little VPS company I found. You already know the one if you've been watching my Twitter. I think it'd be a great idea for anyone looking for a VPS for development or client sites or some other non-mission-critical need to check them out. I'm not sure how well they work for production sites simply because I haven't tried them for any yet! The host nodes are based in Europe as well, so I'm not sure if that's bad for SEO or if it'd cause latency with US visitors. But their support is awesome and so far, other than a couple small gotchas (they started this year but are a subsidiary of a company that's a bit older), the good far outweighs the bad.

And let me pique your interest: we're talking $10 (or less) per month hear and their lowest package gives you 512 MB (1024 MB burstable), 40 (that's forty) GB, 750 GB of bandwidth, and 100 Mbps Internet (so it downloads at around 11 MB/s). Seriously, I was about to fork out ~$20/mo. for a Linode VPS or something, but these guys wooed me on Twitter, and it seems like they're trying to get new customers, so it could be good to get in early. For example, they gave me an extra 20 GB disk space free on my second VPS cuz I was tweeting about thinking about getting another one to host my repos. Maybe I can even strike a deal with them for you guys if you want me to try?

And I'm not benefiting in any way really from the mention (at the time of writing :)), just couldn't believe my eyes and the cost made me a bit nervous, but heck, I figured that risking a few bucks wouldn't break me and am pleasantly surprised so far. They are taking care of me.

Sorry, no. The parking

christefano's picture

Sorry, no. The parking vouchers we have are limited and are reserved for organizers and folks who offer "full-length" presentations (i.e. not lightning talks that are 5-10 minutes).

The reason for this is because we just don't have enough parking vouchers to go around. Our venue sponsor's marketing budget allows for either parking or food. Miguel and I did formal and informal polls with DTLA attendees and food was the winner. In contrast, our parking costs are only $3 (when validated downstairs at Weiland's).

That's OK. I'll still talk if

wizonesolutions's picture

That's OK. I'll still talk if there's time.

Guess I'll have to start peeking into Weiland's at the end. Maybe I can dishevel my hair a bit and limp a little in order to ensure purchase-free validation :D no, no, I mean parking validation.

See you guys tomorrow.

The agenda for this meetup

christefano's picture

The agenda for this meetup looks pretty solid:

  • The Hollywood Reporter demo / case study (main presentation)
  • Drupal database performance tuning (lightning talk)
  • Drupal Gardens tour (lightning talk)
  • My first module (lightning talk)
  • Introduction to VPS hosting (lightning talk)

There may not be enough time for all of the lightning talks, so to get as much in as possible we'll be starting promptly at 7:30pm and keep the announcements short. As always, everyone is welcome to come as early as 7pm for some networking and Users Helping Users.

Christo, has the time been

Hosting survey

patrickfgoddard's picture

If time, I wouldn't mind a quick survey of everyone saying where they are currently doing Drupal hosting. Mostly out of curiosity. I'm currently researching hosting for a client with a "mid-size" amount of traffic.

I just polled everyone at the Burbank meetup by proxy (thanks, Paul!) and people there are using SoftLayer, Linode, Rimu, EC2, AN Hosting, MediaTemple, BlueHost, Drupal Gardens and Buzzr. Did I miss anyone?

One attendee is moving from Amazon EC2 to Rackspace. I'm not at the meetup, but I'm moving from EC2, too. I'm looking at SoftLayer, Rackspace and MidPhase.

There are more replies at the wiki page at http://groups.drupal.org/node/143854

christefano's picture

Indeed! I put "2011" in the title, added my 2¢ and promoted it to the front page. Slowly but surely it's picking up steam and getting attention from the larger community.

I hope someone can turn the results into something more readable than a wiki page with comments. Maybe for 2012 we can start with a discussion with comments and curate the results later in a table-based wiki page?

I recently moved a site from

burt.lo's picture

I recently moved a site from shared hosting at Blue Host to a "Super 4" shared plan at Hot Drupal. This was due to frequent downtime (about once every seven to ten days). I've also configured Cloudflare's free CDN service in conjunction with Hot Drupal. The results are very pleasing, for me and, more importantly, my client. Much faster and (knock on wood) more stable.

Aside from that, for Drupal sites, I'm using a number of shared hosts from GoDaddy (3), Host Gator (3), and Blue Host (1). I'm also hosting a single site on Slicehost.

The Hollywood Reporter session was VERY interesting last night. I know we didn't get through the whole list of modules they were using or not using so we may have to allow them even more time in the future. :)

All in all a rather good meetup last night.
