Need a fast, reliable drupal host for two sites. I'm currently using my Dreamhost account, but I'm not happy with the performance.
Looked around a bit, but the forums were full of unscrupulous people (sales people) with wild claims.
Need fast, reliable hosting with pretty good customer service. Cost is important, but not the deciding factor.
The first site, a non-profit theater, gets around 2,000+ visitors a day (and this will probably double or triple in the next year or so). The other site is an international information site and will attract thousands and thousands, but not at first.
You can either reply to this on contact me off-list at eric@ericsaul.net
Thanks!
Eric

drupal hosting
I've been happy with drupalvaluehosting.com.
Although all their sites were hacked once.

RE: Drupal Hosting - Check Out ClearDev & WebHostNY
I have personally used ClearDev.net on a shared server for a number of Drupal sites and have had great success. They're in NYC, their pricing is competitive, and they use the Installation script to automatically install Drupal and configure the DB. (You can install yourself if you need greater control, of course.) If you need a dedicated box, they can do that too. I've personally had over 99% uptime and their support has overall been very solid.
I also know one of our own members, "grammarian" is involved with WebHostNY (http://www.webhostny.com/) which powers some Drupal sites. I'd check them out to!
Maybe A Virtual Dedicated Server
The problem with any shared host is that you're sacrificing performance for a lower cost. So I don't know if any shared host can guarantee a certain level of performance. A dedicated server requires a lot of maintenance and can cost a few hundred dollars per month. You may find that a virtual dedicated server plan gives you the right balance between performance and cost.
I've been trying Dreamhost Private Servers (http://dreamhost.com/hosting-vps.html) for both my site files and MySql for about a month. It adds about $30 per month onto my monthly plan cost but performance has improved considerably. GoDaddy also offers virtual dedicated (https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/virtual.asp) for between about $30 and $115 per month. The costs are lower if you pay in advance.

hosting
drupalvaluehosting.com has been tremendously faster than Dreamhost shared servers. I didn't try their private servers.

Media Temple
Hi Eric,
I just recently signed up with a friend to share a VPS on Media Temple
(http://www.mediatemple.net/). We haven't put anything heavy into
production yet with Drupal, but thus far we're happy with what they
have to offer. We pay 50/mo split between the two of us (25/25), so I
think it's a pretty good deal.

Slicehost and Rimuhosting
Most of this is from my post on drupal.org about cheap, reliable hosting. Check it out for othe people's recommendations.
I use and recommend Slicehost and Rimuhosting. Slicehost is a little cheaper and has an active IRC channel, but what I love about Rimu is that their support is simply outstanding. It's so good that I can't tell the difference between their technical support and customer support. Every question is answered within minutes and always has the details (and often a list of the shell commands) I need. Also, I'm a night person and it's nice that they're awake when I am.
Depending on where your intended visitors are, you can choose from Rimu's datacenters in New York, Dallas, London and Australia.
Another hosting company I'm looking at is Gandi. I don't have any experience with them as a webhost (their hosting offerings were just recently announced), but as a registrar I like them more than anyone else -- especially since their interview with CNET.
I have to agree RimuHosting support is crazy good
I use rimuhosting and I have to agree that their email only support is crazy good. When I need sysadmin work done I just email them and within an hour it is done. No waiting on hold, no need to learn crazy shell commands. Also, they responded very quickly the few times that I crashed my VPS. My sites load fast and the uptime is very good. They give you a plain vanilla debian installation when you first setup your VPS, so just make sure to have them do the customization that you need right off the bat so you don't run into issues later. The only thing you will have to think about is your Drupal installation. They don't do Drupal support. I guess I'd have Acquia handle that. To each his specialty.
not about nyc
please take this thread to the www.drupal.org forums. there is a section there for this sort of request where you will get feedback from the entire drupal community.
Posts to this group should explicitly be about NYC issues.
Apology - went to main hosting forum and it's untrustworthy
Sorry for the intrusion but I need a good and reliable answer from someone who is not trying to con me. And the main Drupal forums are, well, corrupt with unreliable answers to this basic but unbelievable important question. I'm in Brooklyn and I've been stalking this list for a while...so I decided to think globally but ask locally.
And the Drupal Hosting Forum was deprecated:
"The Drupal hosting forums have been deprecated. Unfortunately, several hosting companies and their affiliates have chosen to abuse the good will of the Drupal maintainers."
Thanks for the responses...still making up my mind...
Eric
You should probably be able
You should probably be able to afford virtual private server.
Try http://www.linode.com/index.cfm . they have warehouse in NJ so that should count for local :-p.
the only issue with virtual private server is that you need to manage it yourself, or find a person to manage it.

Yes, that specific topic was depreciated because the signal-to-noise ratio got insane, leaving it useless for those concerned with hosting issues. This is my concern here as well, that this group stay on topic so it remains lively and useful and explicitly about NYC.
Posts that don't have a specific sub forum in the drupal.org site or group dedicated to that topic here on groups.drupal.org belong under the general "support" forum on the drupa.org site.
As far as the issue of unreliable answers, this group is simply a subset of the larger drupal community, there's just as much potential for getting unreliable answers here as in the main support forum.
Thanks for understanding my concern and I hope you find a reliable host for your site.

I just moved to AT&T for my VPS. Aside from the normal first hiccups of getting a server up and running, I'm pretty pleased with them. They're pretty reasonably priced, they don't charge for bandwidth overages, and you get a decent amount of space too. Also, they offer 24/7 phone tech support, which I give major kudos to. They're not always the brightest bunch of techs. On more than one occasion, their answer to me has been "I don't know," but for most people's intents and purposes, they should be fine.

Actually it's one and the same - the engineers handle all incoming inquiries. :)
Alas, not many hosting companies do this
Alas, not many hosting companies do this and Rimu raises the bar for the those who don't. More to the point, the folks at Rimu do an outstanding job wearing both hats. This is certainly not the case for the hosting company I described in my original post on drupal.org.
