The Drupal Association and the European Drupal community are pleased to announce that DrupalCon Europe will be hosted in the United Kingdom in 2011. We are inviting engaging speakers and are planning over 75 sessions that appeal to everyone from beginners to top level developers, designers and architects. This is the perfect opportunity to network, gain new skills and share your passion for Drupal. Please support this great event.

The venue is located just 15 minutes from the center of London. We have 24 hour access to all rooms in the venue for the entire week. Drupal never sleeps, and at DrupalCon, you won't have to either. If you do, we have hundreds of modern hotel rooms and apartments, all with free internet at a fraction of the cost of central London. We also have genuine British pubs.

If you would like to volunteer to help organize this DrupalCon, please post a comment on our event planning website: http://drupalcon.org.uk/public/blog All volunteers are welcome. You don’t have to be in the UK or even Europe.

Tickets will go on sale in Spring 2011.

Ticket prices go up May 30th!

I have my ticket and am getting ready to book travel. This will be my 9th DrupalCon and I wouldn't want to miss it.

I have been to the venue and it is a cool place. The Beatles played there, along with everyone else. It is 15 min from Central London by (24 hr.) train and there are lots of inexpensive, business class hotels in the area as well as short term apartment rentals.

! @ 24-hr train. That's

! @ 24-hr train. That's important, since I foresee some long conversations or just hanging around the venue to code, and knowing I won't be stranded will help.

9th DrupalCon, wow. This will be my first but probably not last.

Sorry, no 24hr train!

andy_read's picture

I live in SW London, a few miles from the venue, and I'm sorry to say there are no 24hr trains!

But the good news on this:
- Overground trains run all day apart from ~midnight - 6am
- Underground trains don't go in the direction of the venue, but run around much of the city for similar hours
- 24 hour transport is available using night-buses and of course taxis/mini-cabs

But also the venue is a few miles south of central London, so unless you have some special reason to have accommodation in central London it should be much cheaper and more convenient closer to the venue, so no need to travel back into the centre after a long hard evening coding, networking and sampling real beer :-)

For lots more info www.tfl.gov.uk is your friend.

See you in London!

Trains NOT 24-hour!

joates's picture

Andy is absolutely correct.

Travel around London is cheap and easy with one of these..
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14836.aspx (pre-paid Oyster travel card)

you DO NOT need to order online because they are sold in many many small shops and railway stations, the Oyster logo is very recognisable and you can get one for £3 (but you will also need to add credit to that), the £3 you pay for the card is not refundable but the savings you get will easily justify that, there is a £4 max daily price-cap on bus routes (meaning you can take any number of buses, anywhere in central London for a 24-hour period without ever spending more than £4), its a great and cheap way to explore London but as with any major city anywhere in the world, be smart and keep safe, there are good AND bad areas in our wonderful city ;-)

Trains ARE 24 hour

highermath's picture

Amazing. Either the Southern Railway are liars (not impossible, I guess), or the trains to and from East Croydon and London Bridge (for example) do run every half hour (excepting a one hour gap between 2 & 3AM) around the clock. Have a look at http://tickets.southernrailway.com.

I haven't looked at other trains or at weekend schedule, but you can get to and from Central London at any time during DrupalCon..

I bow to your research :-)

andy_read's picture

I bow to your superior research - you learn something new every day :-) Maybe a few of the train routes do run through the night. I live on the line from Victoria station and I'm sure there's a big gap in overnight service.

What I would say though is that 'central London' is a big area and London Bridge station is just 1 of about 10 stations surrounding central London. So arriving at London Bridge much later than midnight or before 6am would still leave you with having to use night buses or taxi to get to other parts of central London.

I looked at all this -- the

I looked at all this -- the trains, hotels and venue -- when we were searching for venues around London. Of course I didn't look at every destination. East Croydon is a few blocks from the venue and London Bridge just happens to be where I boarded the train to get there.

Me too

I live in SW London and was surprised by this too, assuming that all other rail services closed about midnight, but those trains from Croydon to London just keep on going, twice per hour (one to London Bridge the other to Victoria) throughout the night. It takes about 25 minutes from 01:00 onwards (and yes, by that time the tube is closed so make plans for onward journeys to other parts of London) but it still runs!

That Oyster thing is neat! A

That Oyster thing is neat! A bit like TAP here or TransLink Clipper Card in the Bay Area.

Looks like I'll have to set up autopay/protect the card once I'm actually on the ground, though, right? I don't think they'll mail me one overseas :)

Hi!

I'm not going to DrupalCon London and I don't live in LA, so this thread isn't relevant to me. But since I am a local user group organizer I get every post here in my email inbox. Does it make sense to remove this thread from that group?

Thanks!

I Agree

If that's a formal motion, I second it. This discussion is generatine a lot of static in my inbox.

Accomodation

henkvancann's picture

We want to rent group accomodation called the "Holland house" for Dutch and Flemish visitors of DrupalCon in London. Other nationalities are welcome to join us! Who is interested? The costs for the accomodation will less than 50 euros per day. You might be asked to share a double room, but there are single rooms available too. The other feature is that you have to travel a bit every conference day (see below).

Specifics in Dutch about what region we are looking for suitable group accommodation:

  • Fair Field Halls met de trein vanaf station Catford Bridge - East Croyden in 41 minuten te bereiken.
  • Fair Field Halls met de bus vanaf station Catford Bridge - East Croyden in 28 minuten te bereiken.
  • Loopafstand Halls - treinstation 8 minuten, loopafstand accommodatie - treinstation 5 minuten.
  • Beschikbaar in gewenste periode.

Mail me or reply here if you are interested to join us in the Holland House. We have a group of five people to start with.

FYI: I am not very active on Drupal.org because I am not a developer. But I work with Drupalistas every day. I organised a few open source conferences last years in The Netherlands.
