Agenda
Theme for the Night: Based on comments, and presentation this looks to be a Drupal development night!
Presentations:
1. Using Dreamweaver as a Development Tool with Drupal
shaRon sachse is a LA Drupal community member and an Adobe User Group Manager (dmala co-manager). She creates art and expressions for the digital canvas, motion and web using a suite of Adobe tools in front-end development. shaRon will share with you her workflow using Dreamweaver CS5.5 + Drupal. Touching on Drupal theming, linked related files, media queries and more. She will have the new Dreamweaver® CS5.5 the industry-leading web authoring and editing software that provides both visual and code-level capabilities for creating standards-based websites and designs for the desktop, smartphones, tablets, and other devices as a raffle prize for the night!
And...? Do you have a presentation? More coming soon...
If you'd like to give a lightning talk, presentation, announce a job position or ask any questions of the group, please leave a comment below and plan to come a few minutes early. If presenting, be sure to bring your laptop (and power and display cables) and whatever else you need.
Users Helping Users
The meetup begins at 7pm but the doors open a little earlier at 6:30pm for Users Helping Users, which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal. Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bonafide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!
Lightning talks
We have time as well for lightning talks, which are 5 minute presentations from attendees who would like to share something with the group. It'd be great if you have a lightening talk that fits with the evening's theme!
As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.
Job announcements and open Q&A
Everyone has a problem every now and then and the open Q&A session is a chance for attendees to divine answers from the collective wisdom of the group. This is also an opportunity for local businesses to make job announcements and ask for referrals and recommendations.
Raffle! Prizes! Collect them all!
We love our sponsors and have several raffle prizes from our sponsors in the Los Angeles area and around the world. If you or your company would like to sponsor a raffle prize at the LA Drupal meetups, please come early or contact the LA Drupal managers.
Breakout Groups
Time-depending, at the end of the evening we'll split up into groups (sometimes called BoFs, or birds of a feather) and each group can jump into a particular topic. The topics for these BoFs so far have ranged from high performance websites, Features-driven development, PCI compliance and general "getting started" discussions.
Wrap up and Drupal After Dark
Several of us may be going to a local restaurant or bar for a Drupal After Dark afterward. Leave a comment below if you have ideas of a possible bar or restaurant that is nearby.
Looking Ahead
For next month, if you have an idea for something you'd like to learn, post a comment below, or better yet suggest a presentation idea! ... and if you see a topic you'd like to present, post a comment or contact us! Depending on remaining time, we'll have lightning talks, job announcements, break-out groups, and networking. Oh, and of course raffle prizes!

Fight Fight Fight
I can do a quick context talk since Oliver covered panels last meet up.
That would be great Ishmael.
That would be great Ishmael. Look forward to the talk. This is a great community for sharing and collaborative drulaping :)
Sounds awesome :D
While I don't think a fight needs to break out (can't context, ds, panels all get along together? the developers for it sure do ^_~), it would be pretty fantastic to see a talk on this. I'm a fan of the module and it would be cool to see some of the more interesting things you can do with it (my usage of it so far has been fairly unimaginative).
Views default argument from Context
If you don't mention it during your talk, I might be able to pull out a quick example of the Views default argument from Context module. That thing changed my life. It's D6 though.

I'm have to bail tonight, so maybe next month sorry...
Job announcement
I'll be announcing a job opening at the California Science Center and I'd love to talk with anyone who might be interested.
We had a Drupal job fair at Droplabs
We had a Drupal job fair at Droplabs earlier this week and I'd like to take some time to talk about how it went and what the current state of the LA Drupal job market is. Somewhere between 60-70 people were at the event (which also included an LA Drupal meetup immediately after the job fair) and I bet a group discussion about this will be of interest to folks attending the Westside meetup.
Speaking of the Westside meetup, it's been 6 months now since this meetup has been renamed the "main monthly meetup" and I'd like to talk about that, too. We have a tradition in the larger Drupal community of inviting feedback about decisions that affect the community and I'd like to see that happen more here in LA Drupal.
I think a talk about the
I think a talk about the current state of the Drupal job market would be a wonderful topic for a presentation (or would it be more of an informal chat?). I don't think I've ever heard of such a talk & with SO many Drupal shops & organizations seeking Drupal talent in the LA Basin, would be of interest to many that attend the Westside meetup. I know I'm personally curious about what the Founders of Droplabs thought about the job fair since it's something new in the LA Drupal community & also because they hosted the event.
I'd agree that a conversation with the LA Drupal community about the renaming of the westside meetup is a good thing. A very good thing. I know, personally, one thing I'd wished I'd seen was a post from all the LA Drupal Managers outlining why they'd come to that decision when that decision went public & some posts were made. Better yet would've been for them to schedule a virtual event (i.e. IRC) to have some sort of public discourse w/the community. Transparency & community involvement/feedback is the cornerstone of open source user groups. I know it's one of the things I've loved about many of the open source user groups I belong to- no contribution is too small & it feels good to be heard. When you do that for folks, people feel like they matter & are empowered & this creates more of a vested interest for the individual. The net result is that not only does the community grow but as it grows, it grows stronger.
I'd also like to know what the name change has done for the community & specifically for the Westside meetup. Has it decreased confusion, as was part of the intent? I ask that, not to be nosy, but because I care. Everyone knows it's the original & longest running meetup in LA. Sure, there's been more meetups spring up (one even since the posts were going back & forth about the name change & the restriction of the "LA Drupal" name) but noone wants anything bad to happen to LA's original Drupal meetup. Again, a discussion would be great- has it made the LA Drupal Managers' jobs easier, are Drupaleros in LA less confused, overall, has it been a positive thing?
As a co-organizer of one of those meetups that's sprung up (as a result of community demand, to be perfectly honest), I know there were things posted that didn't sit very well with me. It felt like we were kinda left out to dry, so to speak, & while I only speak for myself, I can only imagine that other organizers had similar feelings. I'm going off memory here, but I think it was BSenftner who put it best (paraphrasing): "maybe the LA Drupal managers & the local organizers can have beers once a year." :)
In regards to a community discussion, how many times have we all heard, in presentations, that a key to making a kickass website is to first know who your users are (audience). Shouldn't we be espousing those same techniques for an open source user group? I know it's apples & oranges but I think the general idea applies. I know LA Drupal's kicked a lot of backside over the years, I just want it kick even more! ;)

a bigger conversation than you know
Dear Christo, Miguel, and LA Drupal as a whole,
Christefano and Miguel are bringing up important comments here, and as one of the co-managers I do not want to create a situation where the community is feeling unheard or unwelcome, or that this is a closed environment. None of those things are true.
However, the issues that are being brought up at this time are partially the result of serious misunderstandings between individuals that did not seem appropriate to bring to the larger community. We don't want to burden the people that make up LA Drupal with conflicts and misunderstandings between a couple of individuals. Those misunderstandings are taking longer for us to get past than we would like, and while we are definitely aiming to do our best to get back on track and return LA Drupal to the vibrant, open, exciting and equal atmosphere it has been, we also need to recognize that getting past where we are now is left to volunteers who work full time and have other things going on in their lives.
I would personally prefer that these conversations wait just a little longer while we do our best to regroup and get the group back on track. To be honest, I can speak personally in saying that it would not be fair to place another community member into the mediator role, since I played that role for too long and it was extremely draining.
Believe me, the managers are very aware of the exciting things that other LA Drupal members are doing, including Miguel, Oliver, Scott Knight, Ishmael, Benno, Stew, the list goes on and on and on. We also want to do our best to foster the community spirit. We need a little more time to heal things that, until now, we have kept private.
Thank you for understanding. We are hoping that the community members will continue offering feedback and setting up awesome localized meetups! We also hope that the 2011 Camp will be the chance for a new beginning, and look to the community to help make that happen.
Best,
Rain

Thank you for your comments &
Thank you for your comments & the clarification, Rain.
I did forget to say that the convo should probably be moved to a different thread (in case it wasn't going to be discussed at this meetup, specifically). It sounds like it's something the managers have discussed quite a bit so I look forward to seeing those posts/announcements from the managers. Hopefully, once DrupalCamp LA is in the rear-view.
ps. What's up with down-voting Rain's comments? She's explaining it best way she can atm w/bigger fish to fry (DrupalCamp LA) probably taking up lots of the managers' time?

I haven't noticed any downvoting
I haven't noticed any downvoting... Rain's comment has zero points.
Miguel's right, folks. In addition to everything he said, downvoting without posting a comment explaining why you disagree is missing an opportunity to be open and collaborative. Downvoting has its uses (e.g. flagging spam or off-topic content) but please try to keep things positive.
Anyway, I want to bring this back to my original request. I'm asking to add two more items to the agenda:
There are only two items on the agenda for the meetup (Sharon's Dreamweaver presentation and Ishmael's Context talk) and my guess is that there's about an hour of time left over.
I thought the votes were
I thought the votes were about being able to select your choice anonymously. If that is not how these features work, then the voting should have been directly rolled into the comment section instead of being able to select it the way it has been. Some people choose not to speak up for fear of repercussions from the community. What you are asking for, as far as explanations go, is frankly upsetting.
And for the record, I did vote up on some things and vote down on others.
My personal views on voting
My personal views on voting are at http://groups.drupal.org/node/69658#comment-219138 (the original discussion about voting on groups.drupal.org) if you're interested. There's also a post about voting and its effects on community on greggle's blog and I want to encourage you to add to the conversations where it matters most.
For what it's worth, I'm not telling anyone to vote, not vote, explain why they voted, etc. All I'm saying is that I think that expressing disagreement without saying why is a missed opportunity.
You bring up a lot of points
You bring up a lot of points, from what the managers believe their role is and which members the managers "are very aware of" to how DrupalCamp LA 2011 is somehow a chance for a new start. That certainly is "a bigger conversation than you know" but I wasn't bringing up any of that.
What I would like to talk about is how it's been 6 months since a small handful of people voted in private to call the Westside meetup the "main monthly meetup" and acted in a top-down manner to prevent anyone from using the "LA Drupal" name to describe their events. The questions I have are:
These aren't questions for just the organizers of the Westside meetup. They're for the whole community.
I very much doubt that holding off this conversation "just a little longer" is going to help get the group back on track. It's been 6 months and I haven't noticed any outward attempt to resolve these outstanding questions and help make LA Drupal a more transparent and bottom-up organization.
* The organizers that come to mind are Miguel Hernandez, Oliver Seldman, Scott Knight, Matt Chapman, Ishmael Sanchez, Benno Sebastian, Stewart Pringle, Kevin Kaland, Chris Charlton, Paul Chernick, Pete Benjamin, Matt Campbell, Chris Grant, William Estrada and myself. My apologies if I missed anyone. ^
it was great being part of LA Drupal
Dear LA Drupal:
I loved being a part of the LA Drupal community until about a year ago. For the past year, however, it has been truly painful. I have worked so incredibly hard, spent so much of my time on nothing but conversations that do nothing for anyone. I woke up this morning to some personal emails resulting from the comment I put up yesterday and decided it is no longer worth it. I am no longer a manager of LA Drupal, and I will be taking a break from meetups.
Thank you for the great friendships and colleagues I've discovered in the LA area while being a part of this community.
I do look forward to watching from a distance as LA Drupal becomes vibrant and happy again.
Rain
p.s. The westside meetup is still happening.
p.p.s. Feel free to downvote me as much as you want. I've worked so darn hard that I no longer care.

Rain, I don't know you, but I feel for you and your cohorts who work hard volunteering for Drupal. I know what it's like to bust my A** as a volunteer in leadership, and the only pay I get is criticism. I'd like to vent more about the difference between supporters that have great ideas, and people that just want to complain, but I won't go on about it here. Just know that you're not alone.
Really sorry to hear this
I think the work you do (and put up with) for the community is tremendous. Please know that there are atleast a few people that appreciate everything that has been done so far. I'm very sorry to hear about it and hope to see you again at the meetups (hopefully sooner than later).

I'm shocked, saddened, and disappointed by this news.
I, too, do not know Rain, but the fact that any volunteer in this community would feel driven to this type of decision is very disturbing to me. While I have a fair imagination, I can not believe that a community like ours would condone whatever behavior or personality conflicts that might cause a volunteer to exit like this.
Rain, I hope you'll reconsider -- the community needs people like you.
Everyone else, I hope you'll also reconsider whether you had any part in this situation, and affect change where appropriate. We have need for everyone willing to contribute.

I think you LA folk need to
I think you LA folk need to get away from the narrow streets, the shadowing skyscrapers, the constant honking of the horns and come out to OC DRUPAL because you LA folk are a tight bunch :) By visiting OC DRUPAL you will enjoy open breezy air, crazy wide streets in some areas, don't have to see meters lining the streets everywhere, and plush green parks bigger than a studio apartment to ease the mind. But sorry, we still have traffic so can't help with that one.
As organizer of OC DRUPAL and OCPHP, organizing is really a thank-less time consuming job despite the few thanks we do receive. With an area so vast as LA, OC, and IE I really don't get any sense to this discussion or why it is even part of this thread. I would love and embrace anyone who wants to start a South OC Drupal group. With that said, OCPHP has even worked with LAPHP in the past and it works out great for the community as a whole to cross-promote or co-organize meetups/events. Meetups should be productive towards a goal to provide the most value to those who take their time to attend and organizers should 'never' be attacked as it is and hard work. Besides we are not paid, so if you want to flame me, show me the money and flame away (granted I won't take my time reading). The idea of using a meetups time to discuss anything other than community should be private or at a more focused gathering so those interested can attend for that specific topic. User groups should be focusing on the education and the camaraderie of the community. User groups should not be ran like an Apple Appstore but rather embraced for what its intent is -- the embracing of an "Open" source platform the was built through community. That is just my thought as an outside Organizer of other groups as this thread should be locked, if could, so the focus can be on the talks for the meetup tonight.
I am looking forward to DrupalCamp LA. Thanks greatly to all the organizers and the community volunteers for all their hard work in continued efforts in putting it together. Sounds like a great venue that John hooked up the Camp with and will be a great social event.
Lastly, OC DRUPAL July 20th at KWALL. We would love some speakers.

William, You are doing a great job with Drupal OC. Thank You for everything. KWALL has been very generous and awesome as well for the meet-ups. Big ups to Kevin Wall his crew and williamestrada for all they do to help grow the Drupal OC meet-ups. I have been to Drupal LA Design Camp as well as Drupal Camp LA last year. Wonderful experience at both events. You get what you give of yourself from any event and giving brings more fulfillment all the way around.
Remember service is a gift, so if someone asks if you can help they are offering you the gift of service.
Much Love LA & OC Drupal!
Shine On!
(I am not a hippie, just high on Drupal!)
Thanks Rain
I just wanted to take a second and thank you for all your hard work with the group. I think managing such a large group of members and brokering peace between conflicting personalities can be very challenging. I hope you change your mind about attending the meet-ups in the near future, because your knowledge and input is so valuable.
Rain shouldn't be the one to leave
Rain, it's lame that you received any negativity for trying to help keep members on track. I am bummed out that it pushed you enough to leave. You shouldn't be the one to leave.
Christefano - you already know anyone can organize local Drupal meetups, yet you pester the organizers for some clarification that was given months ago. The reasons for having a Main Monthly Meetup have been well documented in public. Maybe you're not reading the reasons properly. To be honest, Christefano, it's unfair to call out the organization layer as some dictatorship once you were removed as if only a couple of months is enough time to clean up the mess you are responsible for. Instead of trolling, spend your time on is fixing your attitude instead of waving flames of discontent.
Stop trying to give other people the wrong impression about our wonderful user group. The list of questions you post reek of false urgency as if there is a problem or problems that need to be addressed. Nothing could be further from the truth. LA DRUPAL has good dedicated organizers, and you should help and respect them (and others) by not trying to hijack a thread or meetup agenda for political purposes. After reading all the comments here it appears you're the only one who cares to rehash these point, when everyone else is interested in organizing a meetup agenda.
TO ALL MEMBERS - Christefano was kicked out of organizing LA DRUPAL, and from what I see he's still sore about getting the boot. To point at a most recent example, his recent scheme is to pester the organizers enough to get himself re-listed as an Organizer on GDO. He can't let go. San Francisco & New York have a large number of sub-groups like LA but only main organizers are listed, like LA. Why would a change be needed now? Think about it: what does LA DRUPAL gain from listing a dozen or more organizers? Nothing tangible. But what does Christefano gain? A lot more. If it sounds fishy it probably is; I don't think Chrisefano's actions here are genuine. To be honest, his removal as organizer was long overdue. He's too negative to be a one of our leaders. Listen to how Christefano describes our upcoming DrupalCampLA as if the event is in some need of a fresh new start... from what I don't know!?! The event is loved by thousands, world-wide! What I smells is resentment and ego. Personally, I tried to work together with Christefano many times in the past and became disenchanted with his fickle work ethic and above all his constant whining about not getting enough of the spotlight. Don't let his bitterness affect your interest or involvement with LA DRUPAL.
Please, Christefano, stop badgering the remaining organizers of LA DRUPAL. Let the organizers do their job without additional (unnecessary) friction.

To ALL involved- It is
To ALL involved-
It is extremely embarrassing for the 99.6% of us that are apart of LA Drupal that aren't apart of this feud to see threads and posts like this. We are the largest and most followed geographical Drupal user group in the world. Our leaders and members need to remember that. Every meetup, Drupal after dark and Drupal Cafe has been extremely collaborative and welcoming. To be apart of such a diverse and dedicated group is an honor. Let's not tarnish something so incredible and unique.
I strongly encourage a BoF at the meetup tonight to address the issues. Let's move away from this nauseating thread so the rest of us can focus on better things. We have some cool presentations tonight that I am really looking forward to. I ask that all future comments be related to the presentations at tonight's meetup.

To everyone who is as sick of this
To everyone who is as sick of this as I am, please feel free to ignore this. Chris' post is a public and personal attack and I feel that I need to respond to it. When I asked to add two things to tonight's meetup agenda, I had no idea there would be so much confusion. None of us asked for any of this.
Chris was asked to step down as a manager just like I was. I feel we have very different ethics and leadership styles. The thing is... I proposed stepping away from "management" and continuing on as an organizer back in March. I don't like secretive, top-down leadership and stopped using the "manager" title then and there. Plenty of time has passed and I don't have any hard feelings over it.
Of course I'd like to see the organizers in our group be listed in the "Group organizers" block. I don't see any good reason not to do this, since limiting the number of organizers also limits the abilities that our group's organizers have, from curating group tags (using the OG Vocab module), fixing typos in event announcements (as OG "group admins" can do) and adding new functionality to the group site (like the event calendar, the "What's hot" list and @LADrupal Twitter feed, etc.).
I'm a Drupal.org webmaster and can do these things anyway, but not many people know about all these features and I did a Drupal Dojo presentation last year on how groups.drupal.org uses OG Panels. I'd be happy to do it again at one of our meetups.
I never said that DrupalCamp LA needs to be a fresh new start. I was as curious about what Rain said as anyone (except that Chris is attributing her statement to me). I don't know what she meant by it, either, but considering that DrupalCamp LA is nearly 5 weeks away and there's no website or a way to register or submit sessions, it looks like more secretive, top-down leadership to me.
Lightning talk on Block Cache Alter?
For a site I'm hoping to launch for my School's Theater soon (in D7), we ran into an issue where some of the dynamic blocks we had would not show up unless we had block caching disabled. I can do a quick talk on what is Block Cache Alter and how might be able to use it to help out (and how it helped me out) :)
Alternately, I can talk about how to safely 'hack' core Drupal (specifically talk about modules).

Users Helping Users
Hey All,
If anyone will be at Media Temple early for the Users Helping Users time, I'd like to talk with anyone about importing/updating user accounts with an external system. I've been working on something with Feeds in Drupal 6 and an XML feed of user info. My external data isn't set up as well as would be optimal, so talking about potential solutions for me in that area would be great too. I've also been exploring the RealName module to get around weirdness with the way I might have to do this.
Cheers,

Lightning Talk: Creating a Patch with Git
I just taught myself how to create a patch with Git today and submitted it to a project. It would be fun to share with anyone who sees this is as a little too intimidating for them. It's so easy to do now that projects on drupal.org use Git as their repository. Depending on the level of the audience, this might be worthwhile.
I'd love to see this demo'd.

I didn't get a chance to see the full presentation (I saw a bit of what you were doing and was really trying to listen to what you were saying as I tried to migrate my talk to a diff. computer) but I want to say 'Great Job' and 'Thank you' for your presentation and submitting a patch. Its very easy to focus on (and sometimes expect) the 'code heads' to lead on this and what you did deserves attention. I hope it leads to other drupal users who don't yet do so to also contribute back to the Drupal project in the way you did (even as a 'code head', I find it inspiring and makes want to contribute back even more) :)
ride East/NorthEast after the meetup?
Anyone driving, afterwards, to the San Gabriel Valley or, even, to central L.A.?
I'm going to Monrovia, via the Metro Gold Line -- just in case you'd be willing/able to connect me.
Yeah, I'm bound for the SGV.
Yeah, I'm bound for the SGV. Hit me up at the meetup or via my contact form.

Carpool down the 405
Following in Kevin's footsteps, I'm driving down South on the 5/405 from Santa Clarita (near Six Flags) so if someone needs a ride to the meetup and are close enough to the highway, I'd be happy to carpool.
I would like to see this group restructured.
I believe that it is time to examine this group's structure. I would like to suggest that anyone interested in being the sole leader of the group nominate themselves, and that we have an election or elections until one person gets the majority of the votes.
The elected leader would be the decision maker for LA Drupal for the next 12 months (or ???) and could put their name in for reelection if they like. The new leader would oversee the activities of this group and have responsibility for the organization of the main meeting, currently held in Culver City.
The leader could have as many associate leaders (titles aren't my strength) as they like, and they would serve at the leader's discretion.
The leader would sign a succinct pledge, vowing to serve the Los Angeles Drupal community and either perform or delegate and manage the tasks required to nurture and grow the group.
President/Chair/Tyrant/Leader/Manager Idea
As a member of a number of volunteer groups over several decades, I would not want a member of a group where the person-in-charge had to take that sort of pledge. It takes 2-3 times as many people to run/oversee/lead/manage a volunteer group as a paid group of the same size.
I am relatively new to this organization and don't feel knowledgeable enough of the people and organization to propose a solution. If requested, I can offer examples of structures that work for other groups. I think that this group is potentially too important to dissolve because people can't agree to move forward and build a functioning organziation.
We need to engage in collaborative discussions (and possibly disagreements), not automatic disagreements with what someone else thinks.
my new subscription
I am here in the beautiful NorthEast Coast of Ohio (I know, chuckle if you want). I have a friend in Los Angeles (used to live there myself for awhile) and I wanted to be "at the pulse", so to speak, of one of the "hottest and headiest Drupal groups" around. I had no idea how much email I was going to be inundated with. I am learning a great deal from all of you about Drupal, about community, and about living and breathing open-source. Thanks for all the great posts, wikis, groups, and all else posted here.
anyone that missed the meetup
anyone that missed the meetup last night missed an opportunity to experience community at its best. the venue (media temple) rocks, but the people are amazing! I was honored to be a part of it and thankful for everyone who came.
the presentations, as well as the dialog, were as diverse as the comments in this thread. from newbie to hacking-core. But not surprisingly, the ideas come across entirely different in person. I expect, and hope to see, more posts and conversations on how we can make our group more awesome.
The community is what we make it. Who we are but more so, what we do. I feel we are (by far) more alike and in agreement in our goals and ideas, than we are different. I encourage anyone interested in helping the group be more awesome to share openly and constructively this discussion: http://groups.drupal.org/node/158864

Media and Media Gallery
Dan Tokle is setting up this project and he tried out Media with Media Gallery and said it's working great. I also heard from Benno that exporting from Drupal Gardens is a quick and easy solution too.
Yeah it seems to work great
