Start:
2009-02-23 19:00 - 21:00 America/Chicago
Event type:
User group meeting

Last night I received two copies of "Using Drupal", one for me in exchange for a review and one to use as bait for new members. The book is a module mashup recipe book that covers more than 30 contributed modules in 8 common site requirements. I have only looked through the table of contents but I am already impressed with this Lullabot effort. At the bottom of the table of contents page is an awesome list of Lullabot tested and recommended modules that are covered in the book.

So, at our next meeting let's do a module tour of all the modules covered in this book and all the modules you have used in your sites that you can't be without. Add the modules you love as comments below and you can present those to the group. I'm not looking to do an indepth discussion of any one module but describe as many modules as possible in the two hours. If you take up my challenge of posting your favorite modules this thread could become a really awesome resource for newbies and gurus. As added incentive, Who ever posts the best list (attendees will decide) gets a free copy of "Using Drupal".

Modules: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Summitt Dweller's picture

OK, I'm only a month into my Drupal experience so I have little, if any, right to comment on this subject. So please consider that this is a noob's perspective on modules. Lots of good ones posted already so I'm only going to post additions to that list with a few from the list that I think deserve a double-dip.

The Good - You can see most of these in action at http://stc09.tamatoledo.net.

The Bad

The Ugly - Probably something I did wrong but all of these caused problems.

To add

newz2000's picture

I regularly use:

I also recently started using:

I'm getting requests to make "micro sites" inside of a bigger site. This lets you create a taxonomy so that you can choose which theme to use on a per-page basis (or however you want to use taxonomy).

For example, see these two parts of the same site:

(Don't ask me why we have coffee cups on there)

Looks like development on that module may have stopped. Guess I'll have to put some effort into figuring out a solution to that before going to D6.

Module Footprints

Summitt Dweller's picture

Could not wait to check out some of the modules mentioned last night and got pretty much the effect I expected this morning... out of memory, again. Bumped my php.ini setting from 32M to my host's limit of 40M and still couldn't get it all in. Backed off a couple of additions and I'm back up and running again but that left me wondering just what kind of footprint some of these beasts were leaving. Found a patch on the web, made some quick modifications and generated the results shown below.

If anybody is interested in the code I've got patched 6.9 copies of index.php and includes/module.inc. Just write.

Great Meeting!

cattlecall's picture

Thanks to all who helped set up the last meeting - it was great to meet everybody!

I've just started using the Schema module - my description won't do it justice but I'm certain I'll rely on it like Devel:
http://drupal.org/project/schema

@summit dweller, thanks for posting the footprint list.

How are you using Shema?

Michael Hofmockel's picture

I read the description of the schema module but can you provide us a description of how you are using it?

** You are welcome for the meeting. But the real thank you comes when you keep returning. See you next time.
** Any ideas/agenda for the next meeting?

Learning Tool

cattlecall's picture

Good question - I'm pretty much in the middle of the Drupal learning curve and Schema is a great tool for quickly learning the data structures of Drupal and contrib modules.
