Plans?

  • LIGHTNING ROUNDS
New feature. Have a topic you can present in 5 minutes (with 5 more minutes for questions)? The basic idea is there are patterns for developing sites the "drupal" way ("what would drupal do? etc."). Tell us a quick 5 minute recipe for how to put the Drupal "bricks" together. Theming techniques or other things may also be appropriate. Propose it below. Make sure you mention it is for the "lightning round" otherwise it might get confused with a longer presentation.

    • Drupalcamp NYC review - Robbie & Co (if anyone shows up)
    • Mapping with Drupal - Thomas Turnbull
    • Views Colorbox Trigger Field - Eric S.
    • Drupalcon Denver! Next Month! - Ben Jeavons
  • 20 Min Talks
Have a topic that needs more then 5 minutes, we have slots of 20 minute talks. The basic idea is there are broader subjects or more detailed discussions this is the type of talk you would want to signup for, please mention 20 min talk when posting your talk description and the audience you expect to speak to.

    • Social Flow - JR Wilson
    • Theming Mastery - Shawn G.
    • Signup for a 20 Min Talk
  • We will also have the New 2 Drupal BoF(birds of a feather). If you are new to Drupal and the talks don't apply to you some of us will take a group and talk with you about your issues.

Signup Instructions!: 7 World Trade Center security checks your photo id against the list of attendees that we provide.

There was interest last time

Snugug - Fri, 2012-01-13 21:04

There was interest last time about another Intro to Sass talk, which I'd be happy to do, even followed by a BoF if people are interested in learning more/getting set up/etc…

I can give a brief about Compass/SASS and Omega. greengurl and I have discussed having a breakout group, perhaps

snugug and I and others have been discussing best practices for this at groups.drupal.org/node/20614

Optimize social media traffic using SocialFlow

LSU_JBob's picture
LSU_JBob - Fri, 2012-01-13 21:11

I wrote a module last month as a third party integration module for Drupal 7. SocialFlow uses real time analytics to determine the best time to expose Tweet and Facebook Statuses to your audience. So far companies that have implemented this into their publishing workflow have seen an exponential increase in social media traffic.

Treehouse has a 20% discount on the already very affordable service they offer. I'll have that link in my presentation!

Lightning round!

Interesting

pal4life - Mon, 2012-01-23 20:28

Hi,
I would love to know more about this.

Mapping - Thomas would you do a BoF or a 20min?

greengurl - Tue, 2012-01-31 14:59

... the more you talk maps the better ... :) if you would do the honors ...

Forest had asked me to do a

Forest had asked me to do a lightning talk on the book, and given that I've talked maps at so many camps in NYC, I'm planning to stick to just five minutes. But I'm very happy to do a BoF on mapping afterwards for anyone that's interested.

map BoF +1

greengurl - Tue, 2012-01-31 15:38

yes, please, and thank you...if others like, too.

A maps BoF would be great

A maps BoF would be great! I have a question about the KML exercise in your book.

Lightning talk proposal: What is DrupalCon Denver, our theme, keynote speakers, why you should register and the kicker: how we want to have the site usable, responsive, accessible, adaptable, buzz-wordy on your mobile device(s).

Lightning Round on Views Custom field and the Colorbox trigger

esod - Tue, 2012-01-31 23:00

I'd like to do a lightning round on Views Custom Field and the Colorbox Trigger field. I use these fields a lot and would like to show how to work with them in a view. Unlocking the secret of Views Custom Field in Drupal 6 and its Drupal 7 equivalent, Views PHP, opens the door to all kinds of fun. For both Drupal 6 and Drupal 7.

Hi Pat. It was a fun topic to present.

Once I figured out that placing print_r($data); in a Customfield: PHP code field in D6 and a Global: PHP field in D7 exposes the available variables in D6 and the array tree in D7, it was smooth sailing. At least in D6.

I think simple strings like $row->field_actor_url which are present as Available Patterns in D7 is the way the developer intends us to access the values. At the moment $row->... usually prints a 1. In order to finish the widget in D7 I'm using strings like $data->_field_data['nid']['entity']->field_actor_url['und'][0]['url']. To make matters a little more complicated, the strings in D7 usually need to be wrapped in ternary operators, so you end up with strings like this:

$url = isset($data->_field_data['nid']['entity']->field_actor_url['und'][0]['url']) ? $data->_field_data['nid']['entity']->field_actor_url['und'][0]['url']: "";

Kind of hairy.

Notwithstanding the controversy surrounding the use of PHP in Views, I've made features modules of my presentation. You can clone them here:

Coordinating trip to Drupalcamp NJ on Sat 2/4

decibel.places's picture
decibel.places - Thu, 2012-02-02 05:44

Let's briefly plan car pools and train hookups for the trip to Princeton! http://www.drupalcampnj.org/content/directions-and-parking-information

"The Friend Center is located on the corner of William and Olden Streets. It is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Princeton train station (aka the "Dinky"). If you are traveling by car, parking is available in Lots 10, 13, and the North Garage. On street parking is also available. Please be advised that there are numerous events taking place on campus and that the parking lots may fill quickly."

It looks like the earliest NJTransit trip arrives at Princeton Station at 9:20 http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TrainSchedulesFrom

07:14 AM
Northeast Corridor #7821 Arrive 08:25 AM
Princeton Junction
Depart 09:15 AM
Princeton Shuttle #4219 09:20 AM 126 minutes

The train also departs Newark Penn Station at 7:32 AM

But we could probably share cabs from Princeton Junction and get to the camp by 9

Fares for this trip
Adult One Way $12.50
Child/Senior/Disabled One Way $5.75

Amtrak is sold out; anyway it would arrive later and is more expensive $33

Some other info, including a bus from NYC Port Authority, is posted on another thread about the Drupalcamp

I've been offered a ride from and to Newark - works from me.

Robbiethegeek said there are also people riding bikes from NYC - the Bull Goose Loonies!

sorry everyone we wont be

On DrupalCampNJ - Beware Princeton Shuttle(Dinky train)

moranimation - Wed, 2012-02-01 17:38

From experience commuting to and from Princeton by train... the Princeton Shuttle (also known as the PJ&B or Dinky) sometimes does not allow enough time to get a ticket($2.75) from the vending machines. It does, however, give you enough time to jump on board, forcing you to buy a ticket 'on-board' from the conductor... this results in an upcharge (surcharge from $3 to $5 when ticket agents or Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) are available at a customer's departing station) that can double or triple the price of the trip.

This may not be the case on a Saturday, as you may have plenty of time to purchase from a vending machine until the 9:15am Dinky, but beware.

Also 'hoofing it' is a 10-15 minute walk along Alexander Road over Rt. 1 and directly into Princeton University. Pleasant enough, on these mild winter days...
My suggestion would be taxi sharing from Princeton Junction.
