Below is the wiki archive -- Please don't edit

  1. First, do this ... block these dates! Aug 8 & 9.
  2. Second, please, please, we will need help, volunteers, and session proposals at all levels.
  3. Third, we still need some more sponsors. We've already had some great verbal commitments, but we're looking to lock 'em down.
  4. Fourth, follow LAdrupal on twitter
  5. Lastly, check back often... this is just a planning wiki, so details are still slushy right now.

what is it? DrupalCampLA is a greater Los Angeles area camp or unconference focused on Drupal open source goodness.

will it be as cool as last year? idk, last year was pretty cool. But maybe you want to get your drupal on before you drop by Drupalcon Paris 2009 or perhaps the economy is keeping you local? Either way, this event will do you good! awesome weather. cheap. fun. plus a laid back LA 'tude. did we mention Drupal?

will it be as big as last year? bigger? OMG, please stop asking that. It will depend on you. This year DrupalCampLA will bring a g33k'n good time with sessions of interest from n00b to l33t! (newbies to elite). Our aim is to have lots of goodness useful to all levels of drupalistos! We need awesome session proposals, and volunteers/friends to help bring everything together and make this sweet.

where is it? The School of Engineering at UC Irvine, stepped up to help. We're excited to take the camp into a campus setting as many schools are adopting Drupal so we see a natural fit as UCI being the venue. What school will be next?! We think the place is gonna be cool. The venue holds a lot of people so we can hold an awesome event! But we still have some costs. How cheap and free depends on us getting sponsors!

where to register? REGISTRATION HASN'T STARTED. For now, block your calendars and start lining up a carpool or bunkmate. August 8-9th, 2009. Irvine, California. United States.

what's in it for sponsors? lots! show the community some love, and you'll get exposure and face-time of course. Plus, tell us what you'd like to get out of helping, and together we can work out the logistics to ensure community knows how much you helped!

how to get involved? step up if you can help. Let us know if you have ideas or you want to be involved. Many other Drupal user groups are helping us on this one: San Diego Drupal, OCPHP/Drupal, Santa Barbara Drupal, High-Desert Drupal, San Francisco Drupal, and others we will list later. We're open to to everyone that wants to help and be involved.

Help With General Tasks

There are several areas that still need help:

  • Defining sponsor packages and soliciting sponsors. Sponsor packages breakdown $100, $250, $500, $1k.
  • Design Contest: T-Shirts, Banners, Stickers, Pins, etc.
  • Printing - the above
  • Soliciting remote presenters, soliciting high quality local presentations
  • Deciding on any food we may want and then coordinating how that will be purchased/delivered
  • Looking for "in kind" sponsors who may donate services we need

Something Else

We also need help with
* Something else

If we didn't list it but you really enjoy coordinating that part of events or have good contacts in a field, please let me know.

MANY more details to come. sign up below or contact us directly.
Only local images are allowed.

Please add your name below and indicate you want to help. THIS IS NOT FOR CAMP REGISTRATION, THIS IS FOR VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION (Thank you)

  • Nicole Bluto - I would love to help with anything needed. I would be able to teach a session or two and for sure help out with an install fest. I can bring copies of wamp, xamp, mamp on flash drives so people don't have to download it. I can get a projector probably if you want too. I would like to see Chris teach another session about Drupal/dreamweaver and the extension he made. Jassen and I could also provide a small sponsorship donation.

  • Rain Breaw - Definitely there to help out! Will bring my camera and take pictures, too. And to everyone: Nicole (above) and I are going to spearhead a drupalchix track of some sort. We are currently interested in feedback about what might be of interest. I posted to the drupalchix group -- http://groups.drupal.org/node/23188 -- please check out the post and log your thoughts/comments! And if you are interested in helping us organize this, we welcome your help. Thanks!

  • ChristophWeber (www.dialogconsulting.biz) - Seeing an install fest and beginner sessions already proposed, I'd like to extend those ideas to a site building track similar to what we did at SANDcamp. Let noobs learn Drupal by getting their feet wet, and even better, have them take home a working site built the right way. dougvann is right, many camp attendees REALLY need some basics before sitting in front of Drupal Core Developers and Module Authors.
I'd be happy to help coordinate, and I can contribute a session or two. E.g. "Image Handling with ImageField and ImageCache - Regain Sanity and Control" or maybe one on WYSIWYG. We could use Mike Stewart's virtual box or Doug's SandBox. Installing X|M|WAMP and a few modules from scratch is guaranteed to take more time than planned, and turn off people before you have them hooked on the cool stuff of Drupal. Been there, done that.

  • John Romine - I'm helping out coordinating the venue at UC Irvine.

  • Karl Scheirer (http://drupalhigh.onsugar.com) - Happy to do a session and volunteer for things that need to get done during the camp like signups table. Is there a list of suggested topics, or even better, ones that have been requested? It's always hard to come up with something new and interesting.

  • Ishmael Sanchez (www.ishmaelsanchez.com) I'm willing to help with an install fest or just general volunteering. I'm interested in presenting or co-presenting about upgrading modules, zen subtheming, intro in creating Drupal 6 themes, or using Drupal and Dreamweaver.

  • Sid Maskit (optional website link) - I'm up for helping out during the event, and/or leading up to it.

  • YOUR_NAME_HERE (optional website link) - please copy this line, paste it below, then customize it for you. add a sentence to a paragraph in this area about how you might be able to help.

How about 1in diameter DrupalCampLA 2009 pins to sport during the event? I can provide that if someone wants to create some artwork for it.

http://groups.drupal.org/user/21821/contact

We would need 100-400 pins made

Chris Charlton's picture

Thank you, Helior for the offering. Depending on your budget, we would need to see 100-400 pins produced. If you can only afford to donate 100 or so, then we'd come up with a fair way to distribute those. Details can come later.

I would love to see this happen! Thank you both (Rain & Nicole) for proposing this. Maybe someone can sponsor a special batch of DrupalChix pins. ;)

Beginner Session Presenter Available!

dougvann's picture

I just added my name to the wiki as a volunteer. I am so stoked at the possibility of doing as many Beginner Sessions as there is need for.
Check out my contribution to the wiki and consider if its worth helping me get out there.

Hotels?

shawn dearmond's picture

I'll be coming in from NorCal, so can anyone recommend a decent, nearby, cheap hotel? (Preferably one with wifi.)

Thanks! Looking forward to it!

Lots of details to come about "cheap" bedding

mike stewart's picture

Glad to hear! I've talked to quite a few people coming in from out of town, so I bet there's also going to be some opportunities to share a double & maybe a pullout couch...

We'll definitely post options and ideas about how people can connect. We've still got lots of logistics and things to do.

Lodging near UCI

jromine's picture

I'll see what I can come up with. The UCI campus is about 3-4 miles from Orange County John Wayne Airport (SNA) along Campus Dr. UCI does get a lot of visitors, so I should be able to get some recommendations by asking around. As a starting point, see http://www.uci.edu/community.php

UCI has short-term on-campus housing in Campus Village 2-bedroom student apartments http://www.housing.uci.edu/hoteluci/ If you had a roommate it might fit all three of your criteria (but take note of their payment methods). Campus Village is located just northeast of http://maps.google.com/maps?q=bison+and+peltason,+irvine,ca Our conference rooms are about 500ft east of there. You'd have to find a way to get to UCI from John Wayne Airport; I'll try to find out what typical taxi/shuttle prices are.

For nearby hotels I found a list at http://snap.uci.edu/viewXmlFile.jsp?resourceID=259
